I know that people should drink about 6-8 glasses a day, but how much should someone who will run about 5 miles a day drink (especially in the summer heat, 80 - 90 degrees)? Also, I know you're not supposed to drink a lot of water right before you run, so if my XC practice is at 8:00, and I wake up at 6:00, when / how much should I drink?

A good way to figure out how much to drink is to find out how much extra water you are losing during your run. Weigh yourself right before your run, with your clothes off, and then weigh yourself after your run, with your clothes off, before you drink anything. Chances are you are probably losing a couple of pounds going 5 miles in the summer heat. I've found that a 16oz water bottle weighs 1.3 pounds. So, as a runner you probably need an extra 4 cups a day.....but everyone is different. Don't drink down to an exact science. Figure out how much water you should be drinking, probably between 80-96oz on running days, and spend one day keeping track of how much you drink so that you can get an idea of about how much water and how often you should be drinking.

If you're waking up at 6:00 for an 8:00 practice, drink 16-24oz of water right when you wake up and then maybe a couple of sips right before practice. I find that an easy way to do that is to keep a water bottle by my bed side. I end up sipping on it throughout the night if I wake up, and then I immediatly drink what's left when I get up in the morning.

As long as you are feeling good and your pee is closer to clear than yellow, you are getting plenty to drink.

Well, during track, on the day of a meet, I would drink two liters before a race, and one after. Maybe it was too much , but it helped. Half an hour before a run you should just sip a little, though, so you aren't sloshing while you run. The suggested amount you should drink a day 64 ounces, which is about 8 glasses of water.
If you want to be hydrated at 8 for a run, you should have lots of water the day and night before, then about 2-3 glasses in the morning.
Good luck with XC! It's the best sport EVER!

YOu should hydrate at least every 20 minutes when training.

What's a "lot of water"? Drink to hydrate yourself and/or because you are thirsty.

I'd have a couple of glasses when you wake up, then sip until practice. Regardless, you need to drink if/when you need to.

PS. Always run in the shade.

Good Luck

I'm a long distance runner, and often run in the Virginia heat. (Very Humid) If I'm running by myself, I'll wear a fuel belt, and drink when I'm thirsty. If a planned run is arranged with several people, we'll go out and leave jugs of water at two locations, hitting them on the way out, and on the way in. We make sure we're drinking a cup of water at least every 3 miles. This applies for runs above 5 miles. And remember, mix in a few cups of Gatorade, or which ever sports drink you prefer. It will replenish your energy.

Good Luck!

It is a good idea to keep drinking your 6 glasses min every day, regardless of the physical activities. Yet for the strenuous activity such as running, please do take some salt too... not chips or Doritos. Something like a Gatorade (I think that's the name in USA) will do quite well: the principal is not only to restore the fluid supply in the body but also maintain the balance of electrolytes (where your salt helps)

During the training, drink as much as your body requires, and guide yourself on the body needs (it knows ;-)

You should drink as much as possible starting a full 24 hours before your race or practice. Don't worry about drinking too much because well, your body has ways of getting rid of excess...

And don't drink too much in the hour or couple of hours before your race

yes, it is harmful to drink water while or right after practicing sports because our body gets heated up and if we drink water there is a sudden change in temperature which may harm us.
