I will be fishing for smaller fish in rivers and small lakes, i was wondering what kind of rod i should get. I dont want to spend big bucks, but i also dont want it to break on the second cast. So if you guys could tell me some brand names and costs it would help me out alot. Thanks

I think "Ugly Stik's" are excellent fishing rods for certain types of fishing. Ugly Stik's are very "low maintenance" rods that withstand tons of punishment.

BUT, Ugly Stik's are well known for not having the sensitivity that other graphite rods have.

For this reason, if I was on a budget, and wanted a durable, inexpensive, sensitive, fishing rod I would either buy a Berkley "Lightening Rod" or a Shimano "Convergance". Both are inexpensive,($30-50), durable, & sensitive.

(If you MUST go with an Ugly Stik get the Ugly Stik "Lite" series. Smaller fish mean "lighter bite". You will want to "feel" the bites you get!)

I agree with James. If he's a serious fisherman, he already has a lot of the basics, but may want a "special" rod that's a bit more money than he can justify, even to himself. A gift card to Cabela's or Bas Pro Shops or Dick's Sporting Goods is the way to go. After all, he may, like me, not want any more rods (for a while), but really needs the latest whizz-bang accessory or lure or.... You get the idea. He may even save up the gift cards for something really big. That's what I do for power tools - the kinfolk all give me Home Depot cards, & I cash 'em in for a big toy that I couldn't afford otherwise.

Buy an ugly stik light they are best all round rods on the market!
The higher dollar rods are for ppl with money to waste and added with to much commercial hype not one high end rod will last anywhere near that of an ugly stik!
Oh yeah I love the feel of a loomis,st croix or a few these rods BUT do they catch the fish better no experience does!
They are sensitive yes but worth the extra bucks never!
I have several types of rods from the lowly ugly stiks to my custom hand made rod that cost a few hundred bucks yes it is beautiful but not tough enough to last with heavy use!

If you want a good pole try getting ether a Daiwa or Shimano rod they have allot of expensive rods but they both have a few good cheaper rods that are under 100 dollars. I actually like Daiwa better because the tips on their poles don't break as easy as other company's and alot of them cast better and the guides hold up better.

Best reel i think is the shimano solstice series. The most dependable rod is defintty a falcon rod. Around 50-100 bucks. Ive had my dads since he was 14. Now hes 45.

For the money it is hard to beat a Shakespeare Ugly stick combo. I really like mine and have caught fish up to 20 pounds using mine (with 12 test fishing line) I also have the bigger versions by Shakespeare but they are for wreck fishing (in the ocean) and large catfish (over 50 ponds) Plus the Ugly Sticks have a 5 year warranty if they break.

I will tell you that I have MANY fishing poles. Some quite expensive. One of my favorites is a Berkley "cherrywood" I think someone else mentioned and another is a berkley "lightning rod". hese are VERY reasonably priced. 30-50.00. I do often use the expensive rods. It just depends on where I'm fishing and for what. I would suggest the "cherrywood" I use it in a med. weight for walleye in lake erie

please don't buy an ugly stick they are the worst fishing rod made period you will never ever ever see an experienced tournament angler fishing an ugly stick even if they are sponsored by shakespere check out the QUANTUM AFFINITY SERIES or BERKLY CHERRYWOOD these are very reasonably priced rods that won't fish like a wet noodle lie an ugly stick sure it won't break but at the sacrifice of action and feel graphite rods like the two I listed are far more responsive and lighter than a piece of crap glass rod like the ugly stick besides an ugly stick runs $30 and a cherywood is only about $20 and is 100% IM6 graphite with a nice cork handle and also has premium guides the ugly stick has a foam handle and plastic guides take a look at any successful anglers pile of rods and you won't find an ugly stick I promise you

Do what Texas man said, and I would think you would need a spinning combo for the rivers and small lakes you said you'd fish.
