in some cases,when the atmosphere is right,
i can reach Hawaii from calf.

there are a lot of things tha affect the range. If you are in the city and among highrise buildings, it can be a short as 1/2 mile. If you are in the open country it can range up to 25 miles. Atmospheric conditions can affect it also, "skip" is when conditions are just right and your signal "bounces" back off the atmosphere and returns to earth many many (sometimes hundreds of miles ) away. I have been on and in the right conditions, talked from my truck in California to a guy in new mexico.
