You change it when you get back and the license has been filed. Take copies to DMV and SS office with originals of cards and birth certificate.

You can't change it until after the wedding. Just be sure that you purchase any tickets using your maiden name. The name on the ticket and the name on the ID MUST match. Airport security won't care that you were just married. They won't care if you have a preliminary copy of your certificate. You will not be allowed to board the plane unless they match.

To change your name you have to start at the social security office. Bring a copy of your marriage certificate and they have a very short form to fill out. In 4-6 weeks you'll receive your new SS card. Then take the marriage cert. and the new SS card to the DMV. My utility and credit card companies changed the name with just a phone call. My bank required a copy of the cert to be sent in. The process isn't too difficult, you just have to send a copy of the cert to everyone, so it is tedious.

Don´t worry about your passport now-just have your ticket with your maiden name on it for your honeymoon!

When you return from your honeymoon, go online
http://travel.state.gov/passport/fri/ChangeName/ChangeName_851.html, and follow the procedure to change your passport.

Go to the local Social Security office with your driver´s license, and a copy of your marriage certificate, and in about 1 to 2 weeks, you will get a new SS card.

When you get a new SS card, get a new driver´s license.

You change your name AFTER you get married. Your passport, ask the airline how to provide proper I.D.
Don't wait till the last minute to ask this. You might need your birth certificate.
As far as how, when you get back and get your "Legal" copy of your marriage certificate, go to or write to Social Security to obtain a new card with your new name. Call, before writing to see what they will need. Thier # is 1-800-772-1213
Take your legal copy of your marriage licens and birth certificate to the DMV and they will change your name on your license. The rest, just inform people/companies.

YOu can legally not change your name in the US until after you are married. YOu have to wait for the pastor or whom ever married you to sign the marriage certificate you got from the courts, they will then mail it back to the courts. Then you wait about a week and go up to the courts and get copies of it. Department of Motor Vehicals will need one to change your drivers license, car registration and voters card. YOu will need to send one to each credit card place and bring one to the bank for them to change account numbers. Same with home phone, water, electic and cable/satilite. They will each need one too. Then the courts should have given you a paper to fill out for a new SSN card. You have to mail that to them for the new SSN card, need to send them your old one. Once you get that new card back you can send a copy of it to your work so they can change your name there. You can not change your passport until you have a new SSN card and a copy of the marriage certificate. SSN cards take about a month and a half to get back in the mail. Long process nothing that get done over night.

you should be okay - you cant change your name legally until the original papers (marriage cert) are filed in with the clerk's office. So, keep your maiden name credentials with you and you might want to go ahead and bring a copy of your signed marriage cert just in case. everything will be fine - have a great honeymoon!!!

it varies from state to state. I got married in IL. I think I waited a few weeks to request copies of our marriage certificate from the county, and then took a copy of it to the soc sec office, the DMV, the bank to change my name with them. for my credit cards, I just called them up and they mailed new cards. at work, I emailed HR and then gave them a copy of my new soc sec card when it arrived. for my passport, there's a "change of name" application you can mail in with a copy of your marriage cert and your old passport.

I would recommend taking a day off work to go to the soc sec office, the DMV, you bank any anywhere else you need to change your name that has long lines.

I think theknot.com has a checklist for this.

That'll be fine as you will have your marriage certificate with you, and your identification shouldn't be changed yet (drivers license, etc should still be in maiden name since you can't change it till after you are married).
