I used the Nix shampoo on her but the little suckers won't die. I shampooed her on Tuesday when I found them and have been pulling out eggs everyday since. I took her to the health dept today and they still found a live bug. She has thick hair down to her waist and its very difficult to get everything. I've washed all the bedding, and rugs and car seat and highchair covers even the placemats on our kitchen table. I threw away all the pillows. I vacuumed everything that couldn't be thrown in the washer(sofa, chairs, carpeting). I have been picking nits out of her hair everyday sometimes 3 times a day I go through her hair. All the stuffed animals area in black trash bags. Why won't these things go away? What am I doing wrong? Help!

In UK recommended treatment is wet combing with a fine toothed comb. Use loads of conditioner, and have the hair really dripping wet. Do this often (but at least twice per week) for two to three weeks. Once the adult lice are removed (even injuring them stops them laying and breaks the cycle) you should continue to do this 2 -3 times a week. Some people swear by tea tree oil to prevent further infestations. Cutting hair shorter is an option, especially if the combing is painful or causes split ends, but think about leaving it long enough to tie back. It is believed by some experts that tightly plaited hair is less hospitable to the lice.

Finally, try and keep a sense of perspective. EVERYONE gets head lice at some point. Those that claim not to are a) not looking hard enough (and probably spreading them to everyone else) b) lying c) extremely lucky (and rare) or d) living in isolation. The only sure fire method of prevention is to not let your daughter come into contact with other kids, like, ever! Believe me, the social problems this would cause would be much worse.

Finally, take comfort. It is true that lice prefer clean hair (that's probably why the oil works).

After you use the Nix, you have to comb her hair out and get every single little nit there is. If you leave even one of those little suckers, it'll become an endless cycle!

Try this: go get some mayonnaise and slather her hair with it thickly. Put a plastic shower cap over it and let her hang out for an hour or two. Wash her hair after that and get the finest toothed comb you can find and go thru her entire head of hair and get rid of everything you see!

Also, wash any combs, brushes, and hair accessories in a solution of the Nix and water. Vaccumm the car interior too! Wash everything that is washable in the hottest water safe for the fabric.

It sounds like you've done everything you are suppose to do. I went through that too. I read all I could find but never realized that the little suckers didn't fall off when they died. I didn't use the medicated shampoo 'cause of the warnings on it. Instead I found an article that said they don't like tea tree or coconut oils. I had suntan oil that had coconut and tea tree oil in it. I soaked her hair with it and wrapped a towel around it for an hour. Then I washed it out with Paul Mitchell awapuhi shampoo (which really deep cleans hair) which got the oil out. Then I picked and picked and picked. It seemed like I was never going to get rid of them but I did without cutting her hair!!!
You also might want to consider some type of leave in conditioner for her to use for now and in the future.

I also have hair down to my waist and it is very thick. I have had long hair my whole life. And I have had issues with lice also. Don't cut her hair. Use nix once and rinse out. Then use a dog shampoo that kills fleas. Rinse hair twice with this. Use the dog shampoo everyday and use nix every other day. Make sure you use the comb that comes with the kit. If you do this they should go away.

And reducing the hair wont artwork except you shave each and every of the hair off all the way down to the scalp. you have gotten to repeat the Ridx

I know this sounds unusuall, but, try cooking oil, like veggie oil, or corn, right out of the bottle, this way her whole head is icky and every thing will "comb" out. Also, the reason the child has it is because she has clean hair, children with greasy hair usually dont have head lice. But awhile back my friend went through the same problem, and this is what we came up with, this way they have no nice surface to hide on, and use one of those combs, the small ones that come with the lice shampoo, they work wonders.....after your done with this part then you can wash it with the lice shampoo and/or the regular one.....

i work an elementary school and i see it all the time usually on the clean kids. it is a long process to get rid of the lice. keep doing what u r doing i have seen it take up to 4 months to get rid if them. i have heard that the flea powder for the carpets also helps get rid of them in the carpets of your house and car. get some Nix spray and spray the furniture you might have to check any animals you have around. good luck!!

We used mayo once. Coat her hair with mayo and put up in a shower cap. Leave on for 30 minutes then rinse. Baby oil works too. Use pert to shampoo with.

Don't panic. You just have to take all her stuffed animals and pillows and put them in a trash bag and keep doing the shampooing. It will work trust me. If you can't get it out then, you might want to ask your doctor for something stronger.
