I want the really religious people to answer. How do you justify this? How can they put a price on an innocent child's life? Their life is ruined! How can these priests keep this from people for so many years and still go and preach to others? Hypocracy???????

ok encarnation: Life not ruined, only scarred? how can you say that? I guess that's justifiable to you right? Anything but taking the blame. That is what is wrong with you religious fanatics! These were children. They trusted these priests because Adults should know better. Isn't the problem that catholic priests are not allowed to marry also? Other religions allow their ministers or whatever to have a family.
Also to whomever said if I would put my faith in church or govt , my answer neither. I believe in God and I don't think God needs money. Especially not 10% of my pay check! I don't believe in organized religion, it is just a form of control and conning people out of money. Who are they to judge whether you will go to heaven or hell. I certainly would not confess my sins to a child molester!

Also Mahoney covered up for these priests and allowed them to keep working. So no it was not just the guilty priests fault it is the whole organization, that allowed this to keep going? What would you do if it were your kid? How would you feel?

to all you supporters of child molesting priests, shame on you! I can't believe that some of you would try to justify this behavior by saying things like less than 2% of priest do this! That is 2% too many! To micmisfit or whatever your name is. I am not criticizing YOUR priests I know nothing about them unless you are talking about the perverts! You still call these priests? I do not have to worry about my church because I don't go to church! God is everywhere and I don't know if he would like to be in a church with child molesting priests, maybe he should because they are the ones that need him most!

They want to get this out of there way as quickly as possible so they dont loose people who donate money to them.

The catholic religion is a joke. Child molesters, corruption, and a religion that doesnt make much sense.

>>>How can they put a price on an innocent child's life? Their life is ruined!<<<

Would you be happier if the Church took no financial responsibilty for this at all? Sounds like you're taking a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" attitude here.

First of all, no one's "putting a price on an innocent child's life." It was the victims' idea to get monetary damages -- not the Church's.

Secondly, I'm not a victim of child sex abuse -- but if I were, I would resent it very much if someone told me that "my life was ruined."

I would resent the fact that I was being considered a "lost cause." I would resent the fact that people had so little faith in me that I could not rise above what happened to me.

No doubt the victims will carry scars for life -- but that doesn't mean their lives are "ruined." The Church certainly doesn't see it that way. That's why they'll give them whatever support they need -- not just throw them away and say "their lives are ruined."

>>>How can these priests keep this from people for so many years and still go and preach to others? Hypocracy???????<<<

The guilty priests -- their abuse was committed many years ago -- are either defrocked or dead. So, no, they're not continuing to "preach to others." They're no longer in priestly ministry.

That's a hell-a-lot more than the LA Public Schools pay their victims ... so yes, I think It's a show that the Catholic Church will step up to compensate and make penance.

How can a price be put on it ... well, the Govt. seem to have time limits & ceilings for this. Did you know that if a Public High School child gets molested that they can only receive up to $50,000.00 IF they report such molestation within 180 days (1/2 a year) ... that's what you should be freaking over.

Also, when the Catholic Church calls the local police and the Priests get put in jail ... they're out in about the same time that other criminals like John Mark Karr (who was handed on a silver platter from the Thailand govt - U know he's F'd up if the Ty Govt doesn't like his poop) but the USA let's Mr. Karr free ... and the FBI say, "We don't have resources to follow Mr. Karr" on a National TV show.

Don't you wish the US govt would follow the lead of the Church and make Penance too? Or are you happy with USA Senators forming "Stop Child Molestation on the Internet"... electing themselves to head this appropriation only to solicit and "Groom" their subjects (a 14 year old boy)?

Or are you happy with the turnover in the jail system (child molester & pedifiles) ... and the govt saying, "Here's a list of the boogy men ... past this we relinquish responsabilites so you get to live in fear" ... "We can only arrest if they're caught with evidence ... so, bait your kids ... use entrapment "

Who should we put hope in ... Church or Govt?
I put mine in the Church since it is reconcilliating for it's sins with a contrite heart and wallet to back it up

Less than 2% of preists molest children. That is less than in any other social group. No one ever said it was right, or that it was handled right. The truth is that no one knows how to handle a situation like that. If you werent so busy making fun of my priest you might notice what is going on in you own church. Everyone of us should pay more attention to our children

and we would not have to worry so much.

It is not that the church takes up for the preists. It is that we like to handle our own affairs without the worlds nose stuck in it. Plus we are so use to people like you stirring up trouble and being full of biggotry that it is hard to know when there really is a problem.

The times when priests were sent to different churches have long past. It was not understood that it would keep happening and that God's forgiveness was not enough.

Who said anyone does justify this? Can't you people ever make a statement without making gross generalizations as well? If I could work my will, the sorry bastards would be executed en mass. Personally, I think they're all closet homosexuals whose secretly intended purpose is to inflame all people's passions and hatreds against anything religious or of faith. What else explains so many of them never seeing the inside of a prison cell? How many DA's in these cases are catholic themselves?

If a the roman catholic church takes up for a priest that molestates a little child, then why would you people want to be a catholic?

Cardinal Mahoney should book himself a seat on the next flight to Rome, place himself on his knees before the Pope and insist that he (Mahoney) will not leave until the Pope accepts his resignation.
