Catholic Mass Wedding Readings

2017-01-02 18:35:34 · answer #3 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Sorry I do not have chapters and verses memorized ... The most common Old Testament reading if from Genesis describing how God created man and woman. The most popular New Testament reading is from Corinthians which includes "Love is patient, love is kind". The most common Gospel reading is the wedding at Cana in the book of John. When my wife and I got married we used a different passage from John which includes in part "Love one another as I love you".

Your priest can help you pick out readings which are meaningful to you.

You should go to the church and ask for a book of readings. The Catholic church has a book with specific, most popular readings for the wedding mass. In addition, the book walks you through all the necessary readings to choose from such as the opening prayer, responses, all three readings, the vows, etc. It helped me a lot when I had to choose my readings.

Instead of listing them here, talk with your priest. He will take you through the Mass, step by step. We have a family priest, well, he's IS family now whether he likes it or not!! LOL LOL
He officiated at my Aunt's wedding. There were some scripture readings my Aunt and Uncle wanted included in the ceremony. If that is the case for you, talk with your priest about that too.
For this, your priest is your BEST resource.

*One brother could read Proverbs 31 about the woman who fears the LORD which he could turn, look at and direct it to you.. Proverbs 31: 10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. 11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. 12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. 15 She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family 17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. 18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. 20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. 27 She watches over the affairs of her household 28 Her children (will) arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31 Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. *The other brother could read 1 Corithians 13 about the meaning of love and turn, look at and direct it to your husband to be... 1 Corinthians 13: 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Congradulations, I hope you have a great wedding and a blessed life together as husband and wife!

When you go to visit your priest to plan your ceremony, he should give you a copy of a booklet called "Together for Life". It has all the appropriate readings, the order of the ceremony, etc. and is very helpful.

Congratulations!

Often a verse from the book of Ruth is used. I don't know the exact verse, but it's when Naomi tells her and her sister-in-law to go back home to their families since their husbands died and she had nothing to offer them, and she tells Naomi, 'please don't turn me away. Wherever you go, I will go....it's a beautiful speech about loyalty and love and even though I'm not Catholic, I used it for one of my readings and I know several Catholics who've used it too.

when you meet with your priest or attend PreCana, you'll get a list of the readings to choose from (they'll break it down into your options for each reading), and probably the actual text of the readings.
