They would begin to have a life, 3 squares a day, free medical attention, training, build up credit for college, monthly pay, they would get their heads out of where the sun don't shine!
I would think almost anything is better than what they are now doing.

I have noticed at least in my area the majority of homeless have some sort of drug or achol problem which led them to become homeless in the first place. I don't think the safety of our nation should be placed in the hands of crack addicts, drunks, or mentally ill persons. Instead of the revolving door of lock up and let back on the streets, I suggest people have the opportunity for treatment of their various illness before returning to society. The money saved in the various criminal persuits they employ to feed their addictions would make up for their treatment!! I'am not talking about people that have found theirselves homeless due to loosing their jobs, or accidents like fires or death in the family or other legitimate causes, I'am talking about the guy or gal that will hit you in your head to get as they call it "STRAIGHT"! You can walk down the street on anygiven day or night and have someone come up to you and ask are you straight. At first I, being old as dirt did't know what they were talking about, now I do.

At least try to help the folks that really want and need it and then go on from there to find other solutions. Who knows maybe one of the homeless has the answer to the homeless problem if they ever got some help!! Also if the asker has not noticed many homeless people are children do you suggest they join the army too? What about the Vets that aren't receiving their proper medical benefits and have become homeless, would you suggest they reenlist?
Get real!!

The U.S military is a 100% voluntary force. If we were to have a draft, it certainly would not be homeless people. I think if a homeless person truly wanted to join they should, but no way should someone be forced into the armed forces. It would make all of us in the military angry because we have people who don't truly want to be there, and then they would cause all sorts of problems because they would not want to be there. If they want a place to live and free food they could always go to jail. They are just in a tough situation and they will get out of it eventually.

First of all, a significant number are veterans already. Secondly, the number one reason for homelessness is mental illness, and the number one reason for their mental illness is drug and alcohol abuse.
What this society should do is collect up these people and use them for menial tasks such as roadside cleaning and grounds keeping in exchange for three meals and a cot. Sort of like the programs developed during the depression era.
I don't want to hear anything about their personal "freedom", they need to be removed from our streets and given a reason for existence.

Alot of homeless people are veterans or ex military. As a matter of fact my cadet corp officers took us to a place one time where we had a politician talk about the homeless vets and how they are mistreated. That they get neglected medical coverage of that they don't take proper care of them.

That is so funny that you said that, when I was in the ARMY and I got to my first duty station my first roomate I had to live with he was homeless for 5 years before he joined the ARMY,This man was pretty strange and was proud of the fact he lived on the streets for 5 years. He turened out to be one of my best friends in the ARMY.He turned out to be a really good soilder/NCO.I think recruters should try to target homeless people with no substance abuse problems and are healthy. But thats probly hard to find. And give them a new life in the Armed forces.

Alot of them don't qualify for the military. You have to be between a certain age, in relatively healthy shape, mentally stable and no real criminal record.
Anyone that is homeless that passes these qualification I think should join the military.
They're always looking for people to fill the ranks.

hey northpole, don't stereotype the homeless. I was homeless once, and yet I NEVER panhandled or washed windows. As for the question, the (young) homeless shouldn't be DIScouraged from joining. They, too, are citizens who just may have alot to offer, even if they ARE down on their luck temporarily.

Are you nuts ? Most have mental issues they aren't on the street because they are lazy most can not take care of themselves and you want them to try and take care of their unit in the heat of battle ?

A number have delusions and hallucination and you want to give them a gun ?

Wow

No it is a bad idea of unparallelled proportion to encourage the homeless into military service

At least 100 % have emotional issues esp if they have been homeless for more than 2 months Just being kicked around by society and being homeless will bring them to emotional problems even if they entered the street life perfectly adjusted

But you want to view them as disposbable people and make them go do somthing you approve of

Shame on you and your so called free society

The military is not a social service to house indigents. Its a machine to serve and protect this country. You actually have to work in the military and earn that money and services.
