I have recently heard of a person who has had a stroke and suffered very minimal damage while gaining abilities that allow him to do complicated math problems in his head and learn languages in a matter of days. What is this called? I heard it begins with an "s" and sounds like "sadent".

The word is SAVANT

He may have started using alternate pathways to circulate blood in his brain. Are sure it is true? A stroke usually doesn't lead to this...

This is not a consequence of stroke, EVER! Stroke lessens abilities, not improve them. A person who is a savant has always been a savant; you can't just "become" one.
