In Ireland Catholics and Protestants are fightind , In Iraq Shia and Sunni are fighting, In Srilanka Tamils are fighting. In my personal view there are two basic reasons
Lack of freedom of expression
Unjustice
I dont think religion is the basic problem but my personal view is that it is the misuse of religion for political beneficals.
All opinions are welcomed but my personal request is that there should no insult to any religion.
Peace and Blessings

It's really complicated like a lot of things. Lack of freedom and injustice are a little vague and broad as reasons. One of the reasons are the fact that Islamic countries have been dominated by imperial powers, and the strong sense of pride that has turned to shame in the Islamic world demands revenge.

Other reasons: Economic frustrations, repressive governments, repressive religious domination, all these can translate into hatred and anger that can be directed toward a foreign scapegoat of evil, i.e. the West. This doesn't even take into account things like the particular political power struggles taking place within countries where terrorists are being recruited, or the apocalyptic expectations in Islam as in Christianity.

Everyone has given magnificient answers for this question. There are several facts that are mentioned...

I would also like to express my view on this. I feel that the main problem is "EQUILIBRIUM". The lack of balance in the earnings of the people cause the problem. When there is a difference between the earnings of the people, the lower margin feels frustrated and tend to involve in antisocial activities.

So I feel that this is caused due to the lack of equlibrium among the lifestyles of the people world-wide.

Thanks
Kiran,.

I think that the basic cause for Terrorism in any form is EVIL and selfishness. Terrorism is not just on the global scale.

We see it everyday in our communities and it gets press attention, but it is never called terrorism. Abuse, in all it's forms, is also a type of terrorism. We are not fighting a war on that- we just slap the guy on the wrist lock him up for a few months then let him out again to terrorize the same people or new people. This can be solved, by stiffer sentencing for these monsters. We have to keep them out of society, so that they can no longer terrorize people. On the flip side, the people being Terrorized, need to stand up to them and not take it anymore. They need to stop it when it is a small problem and never put up with this. My motto is a man will only hit me or my children one time. If you stop it the first time and if there are tougher penalties for these people, the problem will cease to exsist.

It is the same thing with Global terrorism, the problem is so bad because we have allowed it to get that bad. If the government would have come down hard on terrorist the first time they hijacked a plane- it would have sent them a message that this is not acceptable and would not be at the scale that it is today. Just like the battered wife, if she were to end the relationship the first time he talks down to her or shows any sign of aggression to her, it would never escalate to severe violence towards her and her children, but she negotiates with her. He says he is sorry but that somehow it is her fault and she believes him and allows his behavior to continue, in essence, she is enabling him. Likewise, terrorism is so bad, because we have spent decades making excuses for them- even after they attack us and kill innocent people, we still make escuses, we still take the blame- it is because of our SUV's and Fancy Houses. IT is becuase of all our Freedoms, it is because we sent troops to their country to stop them, that is why this is happening. Instead of placing blame where blame is due- it is because there are evil men who's primary objective is to kill us- we make other excuses, try to figure out what we did to cause this. We say that they are only following the dictates of their religion (which may or may not be true). This is not a religious issue, it is an issue of EVIL, pure EVIL. That is the only word that can be used to describe this. But it will not be stopped until we call a spade a spade and put an end to all of this. We need to stop enabling their behavior and stop them before, they take control of us and we live with a terroristic government.

Catholics and Protestants stopped their terrorism years ago, and what they were doing went against the teachings of Jesus. The koran is the cause of the islamofascist terrorism plaguing the world today. Read it yourself and you will see. You are right when you say lack of freedom of expression and injustice leads to terrorism. Read the koran and you will see that in 8:12 allah brags about being a terrorist and it tells muslims to chop off the heads of infidels (meaning all non-muslims), and even tells muslims to beat their wives in 4:34.
Read it and see.
Wake up and smell the jihad.
And if you say I am insulting islam I ask you why you think that when all I do is quote the koran and ask you to read it for yourself?

It is not religion to blame but certain people that exploit the religions. Behind every terrorist or extremist sect is someone that is power hungry or driven by the need to be right. This is the problem with "religion" it is too easily corruptible. I am a non-denominational Christian and I see the horrors that have been done in the name of different church sects and it makes me sick. When you have a charismatic figure who can bend their religion to suit their purpose this is when there are problems there are always people who are going to be willing to be a martyr to follow charisma.

Everyone's answer misses the point.

Terrorism is a WEAPON used against civilized societies in order to take control or have power through fear over their society. Anger has nothing to do with terrorism. That is a lie retold over and over by NPR, CNN etc.

Terrorism includes blowing up women and children in cafes and bus stops. If it were merely anger or fighting, disgruntled persons could fight against a government / army. Terrorists just kill innocent people and claim responsibility in order to win an emotional war.

This explains why the war against terrorism isn't as easy as dropping a bomb on a target. Civilized societies don't seek to bomb children's schools. Terrorists hide behind human shields because civilized societies value human life. Terrorists value human death.

Controlling the world - the age old problem for many years.

The animals believe that it is survival of the fittest. Only when we have the Lord are we above the animals. The Bible says that without God we are nothing. God says if we continue in sin He will turn us over to depraved minds. Depraved minds terrorize and kill INNOCENT people.

If you consider that the British called the American revolutionists "terrorists" at that point in history it might give you some perspective.......Gee, those Yankees hid in the bushes and ambushed and did not fight in conventional ways......
