When I was a kid, I used to hear so called grown ups trying to scare us kids by saying if we lied or did something sacreligious that god would strike us down with lightning. Well, I'm still sacreligious, but I don't hold metal rods during a storm.

So when will god see fit to strike me down. What kinds of signs should I be on the lookout for?

Zeus maybe? I don't know that, but it'd be my first guess.

"Let's just say that if complete and utter chaos was lightning, he'd be the sort to stand on a hilltop in a thunderstorm wearing wet copper armour and shouting 'All gods are bastards'."
-- Rincewind discussing Twoflower (Terry Pratchett, The Colour of Magic)

"He says gods like to see an atheist around. Gives them something to aim at."
-- (Terry Pratchett, Small Gods)

People have called me dyke so much at my school that I don't even find it all that offensive anymore. Sometimes, my gay friends and I would call each other fag and dyke when we are joking with each other but that is because we are close. I don't know if this guy is trying to be funny or if he is trying to be offensive but there is no reason to call you outside your name like that. If a random person did that to me I would not be happy but I generally get over it because I get called offensive names a lot. I never overreact but I do tell them that I don't like it nor appreciate it. You're not being a prude, I think that you have the right to the bothered by it. I think that you should tell him that you don't appreciate being called dyke because it's offensive to you. You have a name, and he should call you by your name.

When I was a kid my mother used to say that God was bowling-when there was a thunder storm. She would ask me what I did wrong to get God so mad. I am not sure why parents/adults do this to their kids. I play around with my kids and told them what my mother said to me- so at least they know I am joking when I ask them what they did wrong when there is lightening..we laugh at about it. :)

I think Zeus. It was viewed in ancient times as an instant punishment by the gods if you were struck by it.
