When she asked what tooth I was there for I said the one next to the last one. She pulled the last one. Now I am setting here with the tooth that is bothering me still in my head and a hole next to it where the tooth that was not bothering me used to live. I callled and told the receptionist what I discovered when I removed the packing from my mouth. I am waiting for a call back. What does she owe me. Does this happen often?

To Emmalue. Well it did happen. I have been going to this dentist for a few years. I am shocked that it happened also. Her assistant asked me which tooth was bothering me. I told her and she said number 13. The dentist pulled the wrong tooth because of her assistant.

She definitely owes you some free dental work. She should correct the problem the best she can cosmetically and do it for free! Did she not do x-rays or an exam?

I'm sorry, but I have a problem believing this happened exactly as you say.
No dentist would ask you why you were there - they would know in advance which tooth was scheduled and your x-ray would be on display in the room before you were seated. As an additional precaution, the dentist or assistant would review the treatment plan and talk to you about it.
If this really happened, it would be extremely unusual and would mean that several people in the office all had to make the same mistake. Highly unlikely.
Edited to add: #13 is not even a back tooth - it is a bicuspid. The last tooth on the top left is #16 IF you have your wisdom teeth. #15 would be the last if you don't. If you pointed to a tooth and said "this one hurts", an x-ray would still be taken to identify the bad tooth. It is possible that you experienced "referred pain" from one tooth to another. Either way, it's premature to be saying the dentist pulled the "wrong" tooth.

You will have to seek the opinion of your old dentist who is much specialized than this new one, or have another much professional dentist to look into. Seems like the new dentist you had gone this time are the neophyte ones (new in the field) and you could have been one of the few of it's patients. Your new dentist should have applied first xylocaine anaesthetic oral gel on the affected portion so that no pain will be felt in the re administration of the novocaine. Unfortunately the dentist didn't and you have to endure all that pain. Secondly, dentists don't just do the extraction procedure if the gums are swollen or needs to be treated first from infection. Most likely, this dentist was careless enough and neglected the proper handling procedures.

She owes you a refund for pulling the wrong tooth and a bit more for the good tooth that is missing. Have her pay another dentist to remove the one she left though. I only say that because you don't send food back to the restaraunt kitchen cause they will spit in it, you always tip the people who cut your hair or they will royally screw your hair up and you never ever ask the person who pulled out the wrong tooth to please pull another one cause they might decide it is better to give you too much gas than have you ruin their reputation. If you go talk to the dentist make sure you take a voice recorder to the meeting in case they fess up to the mistake. that kind of evidence is crucial during court.

Frankly, if your dentist didn't x-ray the area first, she was already incompetent. To then pull the wrong tooth, well, I can tell you, get a malpractice laywer and sue that dentist until she loses her license and can no longer practice. You have a strong case, and that dentist needs to be removed from the profession.
SUE HER!
I hope your mouth heals quickly. Best to you!

omg that's bad ouch, that's her fault, fool. Don't know about her owing you anything, there isn't much that can be done now. you still have a toothache and you are minus a healthy tooth, you still need to get the bad one out so go back the the dentist. Don't ring, she probably knows about her mistake now and will avoid you like the plague unless you go back. I've seen it happening too often before, doesn't mean its ok though.

the dentist should of taken an x-ray before pulling anything and re read the x ray just before the pulling. Thats what my dentist did last month when I had 1 pulled.

You need to contact a lawyer. I'm not a "sue"-happy person, but she also caused you to lose a perfectly healthy tooth! Now you'll definitely need a partial or your bite will be off and your teeth will shift, etc.
Good luck. What an awful thing to happen!

That was so unprofessional of her...didn't she do any x-rays or anything to see which tooth really needed to be pulled?
