How Can I het special effects such as gun effects into a home video?

I mainly want a simple and FREE way to get good effects! Not Windows movie maker please!

If you don't want to use an editing program to add the effect after shooting, then you have to plan ahead and have your "foley" artist ready as you shoot. something like live radio programs. This is done a lot on public radio Garrison Keilors Prairie Home Companion show.
