My son is 2 in November and I plan to put him in a bed just after his birthday. I have got a bed guard and I am taking him shopping for him to pick out a new duvet etc to make it seem like he is part of it. If your son can climb up on things and get down ok then its fine but I would wait a few months so his legs get stronger on climbing - my son can climb and get down ok now but I just want to give it a few months - but get a bed guard ......oh and possibly a stairgate for their room so he cannot wonder and fall downstairs !!

I have just put my 21month old son in his first bed (last night) and i feel that this is just about the right age. My safety precaution recommendation is buy a low lying bed i.e a metal base with the mattress from the cot tucked slightly underneath it, that way if he does fall out he will have a soft landing. (mine did once last night) Also the most important is a gate on the door so he cant fall down the stairs and everything climbable or breakable out of reach. Good Luck

Hi,
There is no specific age when this should be done as all children are individuals.
My son was only put into a cot bed when he became physically too big for his cot and this was disturbing his nights sleep. He was around 21months.
My daughter who is petite stayed in her cot till she was 28months.
When they moved onto a bed we installed a stair gate at their bedroom doors to prevent accidents on the stairs if they decided to wander in the night.

We lowered my daughter's cot and dropped the side when she started climbing out of it.
We were living in a one-bedroomed flat, so there was no room for a single bed, so she stayed in her cot till we moved shortly after her 3rd birthday and she had a room of her own and a single bed for the first time.
IKEA now do some nice little plastic stools in the children's section. These are ideal for a little one to use for climbing in and out of bed, to reach the loo and a sink. I bought a couple to use here for when the grandchildren visited.

my daughter had just turned 2 when we converted her cot into the bed. The main reason was that she was trying to climb out of it so we thought it safer to put her in a bed. Just make sure you buy a bedguard to stop him from falling out.

it depends on how safe it is in the cot, if you think he might climb out them mabey you should consider a junior/cot bed that's low to the ground and has a safety bar at the side

When he starts threatening to climb out of the cot!! Get a bed guard, stick a quilt on the floor or push the bed to a wall.
Good luck - they think its highly amusing to get in and out and in and out for hours!!

We put our daughter in a twin bed around 2, we had it up against a wall and got a guard rail that tucks under the mattress for the open side, it could collapse down when not in use, it worked great. I got it at Wal-Mart for around $40.00

We knew our daughter was ready for a bed when she kept climbing out of her cot and slept on the floor, lol.
It doesn't really depend on age just when they are ready - you'll just know when he is.
