This follows on, kind of, from my previous question about the origins of the universe.

A widespread, and often valid, contradiction of religion is that its believers follow it without due consideration - for example, if we take Christianity, they will argue the Bible, and everything contained in it is right.

Whether or not this is true is irrelevant for just now - but people often say in response to this, i've realised on here "where is your proof?"

So it's all about proof, is it. Well, I have to ask about proof of scientific theories too. Ah, now hang on, I know the scientists have done the work. Give me a sec.

Someone replied to a question saying "99.9% of scientists believe in the Big Bang Theory". So it's easy to quote statistics.

But statistics are so easily manipulated. And you may tell me that "mathematical formulae" prove the universe was not created by God.

How many of us, in all honesty, myself included, actually understand the complex physics and maths

involved in these theories? Not just, oh yeh, I know how evolution happens. But could explain to someone else the maths behind such and such a reaction oin the creation of the Earth?

So my question here is, is “proof” in the form of science – mathematics, physics, etc. any more of a “proof” for something than the Bible, if you can’t explain exactly how it happens? (And you may say you understand perfectly, so if you do, I’d like some “proof” of that before I am convinced as well.)

I’m not trying to insult people’s intelligence at all – all I am saying is, we cannot all be rocket scientists. If you do not fully understand the facts you talk about yet follow like a sheep anyway, is that really any better than someone who follows a religious text with no questioning of it?

(sorry that was a bit wrong…and again….this is NOT an attack…it’s just an alternate point of view thrown in there….)

Only about 55% of scientists beieve in evolution, who came up with 99.9%?

To become more than a theory, evolution will need to be proven in the lab (not just micro-evolution, that is a science fact, but the big bang all the way to the creation of life).

You are right, mathematical formulae can be manipulated.
If you have ever seen a movie by Pixar, you have seen a bunch of data processed and manipulated. If you just believe that data equals truth, than you believe that lamps play ball, cars talk, that there is a world of robots, ...

Evolutionist say that humans came along millions of years after dinosaurs. But there are several places around the world where there are human and dinosaur footprints in the same rock.

Those who say that it is about proof are not correct. Science is not about proof, and religion is not only not about proof but it is not even about evidence. Based on the evidence, far and away most scientists take the big bang for granted. Who cares what the percentage is precisely. It is true that most people cannot understand the math, and do not repeat the math for themselves when accepting that the big bang is a good theory to latch on to. Denial of big bang is not limited to theists, but the number of scientists who deny it are small in number. That does not make them necessarily wrong.

Science is not about jumping on a band wagon such as big bang, but in adopting an open attitude of believing in natural causes, where such beliefs are open to change. Religion is about jumping on a band wagon, such as catholicism or islam, and in adopting a closed attitude limited to a specific set of, out of many possible, beliefs in supernatural causes, where such beliefs are not subject to change except in an all or nothing manner, such as when people jump onto the band wagon of a different religion.

Mathematical formulas have been tested over and over and every time they hold true. If something can show the formula is wrong then we make a new one and go on.

You don't have to understand the math of physics for the laws to still hold true.

In other words no matter how much you disbelieve physics the laws are still there and still working.

The difference is that it is within my powers to go learn the hard math and hard physics because its there. If a test is run 1000 times and every time the law holds true then I don't need the math for it to be good enough for me. In other words. '

Just because I don't understand how a car engine works doesn't mean that every time I start it a matter of faith is involved I know it works because its been shown to work by other people.

No one person could have written the bible, and so many places mentioned in the bible that people of that time couldn't have traveled to all of them. So it goes to show that God does exist.

i'm sure there are many scientific theories i don't fully understand (to your level of understanding, at least). that doesn't make them any more or less invalid. scientists are the ones doing the research, not me. so it's up to them to know what they're doing, not me.
