It is saying that baptism is an identification with Christ's dead state... specifically, an identifiation with burial.
Col. 2:12 agrees, saying we were "buried w/ Him in baptism."
just as the man Christ died & was buried while dead, so we die to sin at repentance & are baptized while repentant.

even though this scripture is not teaching on the proper baptismal mode, the reference to baptism only makes sense if baptism is by immersion.
a peson is not buried by sprinkling a few drops of dirt on the body. the body must be totally submerged under the earth for burial.

also paul's teaching only makes sense if baptism is in the name of Jesus Christ.
baptism is a personal identification & a burial w/ Christ, not with 3 separate persons of a trinity.
only Jesus Christ died & was buried on our behalf.
this scripture bears out this reasoning, otherwise paul would not have thought of baptism as a burial w/ Christ.
this type of baptism was practiced by the early church. only by doing the same can we preserve the biblical significance & symbolism of baptism.

we receive "newness of life" through the indwelling of Christ's Spirit.
we are now able to live a life of victory over sin. we "walk in the Spirit", not fulfilling the lust of our flesh as before conversion.
this removes the guilt of past sins & is also available to help us overcome sin in the present & future.
the gospel of Christ (repentance, baptism in Jesus' Name, & the infilling of the Spirit) is not only a remedy for sinful acts, but also a remedy for our sinful nature.

The glory of the cross and Jesus sacrifice is told by representing our selves in Baptism--It is not the Glory of the cross we exemplify but the Glory of the resurrection--as we rise from the Baptismal water we are to be ever vigilant to walk in the way of Jesus Christ because he--upon Calvary--shed his live--that I might have life and have it more abundant

It does not matter what anyone's heart says. II timothy 3:16 says "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, correcting, rebuking and trainning in righteousness." God's word is supreme and everything He says is true and relevant. As far as this verse, we are to die to ourselves, to our sinful nature but we have new life in Christ Jesus because of the power of His ressuection. We have a nwe life and we need no longer live in sin.

Our spiritual baptism is the death of our old self and the birth of the risen Christ in us. When we become united with Him in His death, then we are united with Him in His resurrection to live eternally with God.

Our baptism is symbolic of the burial of our old self, which is now dead. Since we have been made new by Jesus Christ, we should be living according to His teachings.
