It might be because of the scratching. I have actually scratched myself until my blood vessels broke under my skin. When you think about it isn't that what happens when you get a hickey!?!

There is a possibility that if someone scratched the mosquito bite too hard that they could break the surrounding blood vessels which is similar to what happens when someone gets a hickey. However, the marks would usually look more like fingernail scratch marks instead of round like a hickey from suction.

if it has no bump, then it isnt a mosquito bite, however some ppl scratch their mosquito bites so they end up looking like hickeys (a break of cappilaries that releases blood under the top layer of skin)
