I can always tell when my 9 yr old golden retriever is ill because his ears go cold. he has been ill for about a week and at first he was panting a lot and he keeps going off his food a little bit, he eats but only when prompted. also if you hold your hands (with food on them) to him he pulls away when he normally licks them. he has also started lying right next to the door and instead of barking and wagging when we get home he waits until the last minute to get up. apart from this he still seems lively and playful. HELP!!!! i love my dog to bits

he hasn't had any major symptoms to take him to the vet it's quite likely that he's getting older and concidering it's up to my parents to take him to the vet (I have been persuading them since he got ill) i would really appreciate it if i didn't get nasty responces. i am no where near old enough to be able to drive him to the vet.

Well if you love him to bits than why haven't you made a appointment at your vets to have him checked out?

Your vet is the person to tell you whats going on with your golden.
Get him in to be seen OK.

He may just be getting older. Have him checked for arthritis (which would explain him getting up at the last minute), the loss of appetite could be for a number of reasons.

Make sure he isn't constipated or has runny stool, are his gums pale? These are clear signs of iillness. Is he more lethargic than usual? Do you notice him limping around a bit? Is he still eating as much as he used to?

Good Luck

He might just be getting old. I have a 10 year old Vezla and she still hunts birds and mice but she just lays around the house. Before we switched her to senior dog food she would not eat a lot. I think your dogs problem is he just is getting old or he is getting to exhausted at times or out of breath.

Even a minor detail that is obvious to you should be taken seriously. If you love your dog then go to a vet and discuss these symptoms to him/her.
