Some restaurants throw cooking classes a couple times a month. Meals On Wheels always needs volunteers for cooking. Homeless shelters need volunteer cooks. Churches always are looking for people to donate to bake sales. The community pages in the paper always have some cooking thing somewhere. Offer to cook for holidays or potlucks. Ask your grandma (seriously) for her tips and tricks. And read read read about cooking and recipes. Question everything, like "WHY do I have to use baking powder?" Part of being self-taught is learning the 'whys' along with the 'hows'. Good luck!

Pick any restaurant where the cuisine interests you, and meet with the owner or head chef.
