On the outside. On my wedding day, I removed the engagement ring. After my husband placed the wedding band, he later placed the engagement band in front of it.

I hear that the wedding band is supposed to go first on your finger, "closest to your heart," and the engagement ring goes on top of that. But there are also lots of bridal sets where the engagement ring and wedding band interlock to form one big ring. Those can be really pretty...

tradtitionally, the band goes inside and the engagement ring outside, to protect the band since that is really more important (and it's closer to your heart, etc). if you're worried about your engagement ring, you can choose to flip it or wear the engagement ring on a different finger entirely. my enegement ring is a spoon ring so I have to wear it on my right hand instead of with my band.

In the US you are supposed to wear the wedding band closer to your hand and the engagement ring on the outside.
My wife however, wears them the opposite way. She says that it looks better that way.
