I am absolutely fuming!! We had a large display cabinet left in our house by the previous owner. It was in good condition, made of good solid and ornately carved wood, all the lights worked etc.. the only thing was a bit of varnish wear at the edge of one of the shelves that could easily be repaired by someone who was 'handy'. I must have rang round about 10 different charitable organisations to try and donate this, but they all said 'no'. The last one I tried, said yes, so I mentioned the varnish wear and offered to send a photo, but she said 'oh no problem, it'll be fine'. The bloke turned up at 2pm (after someone waiting home all day from 8.30am, although granted for something else too), and said he wouldn't take it because of the damage!! WHAT!? Ok, next time I give something to someone for FREE, I'll make sure it's a Louis XIIIth sideboard or something that has been in bubble-wrap for the last 100 years and is in no way marked or damaged shall I?
I'm so mad about this...

....and the sofa situation (another posting!!), that I'm going home to smash it up with a hammer. I shall take great delight in destroying the damn thing! I need to take my anger out on something, and that took the short straw.

I certainly have been to weddings the place they have made a donation in lieu of favors. They located a card - very very resembling a place putting card which pronounced what they did and what charity they picked. One wedding ceremony did this for a breast maximum cancers society and each and each card had a pink ribbon pin linked. i don't be responsive to approximately this for weddings. it is a extreme high quality gesture yet you may make the donation besides as a replace of starting to be it a prefer. some human beings sense like the bride and groom "cheaped out" while it got here to favors by fact no person is acquainted with how lots grew to become into certainly donated and that they do no longer come away out of your wedding ceremony with something. some think of it is a super theory. i do no longer care the two way quite.

This is ridiculous. I do not know where you live but in our area both the RSPCA and Oxfam collect furniture and it has not got to be in mint condition, provided it is clean and serviceable. In some areas, so do Social Services to help set up homeless and penniless people.
If they don't your way, there is no need to smash anything. Ever heard of FREECYCLE? We have one in our area too, and both your cabinet and your sofa would be collected by the people who want them and when it suits you. Have a look at the website, it may be the answer to your problem.

Good luck!
PS. I have just seen the above post and the Oxfam/ Matalan story. Oxfam no longer ship clothes or blankets abroad and try to source products locally in the countries where they are needed to avoid carting stuff all over the world as the cost has become prohibitive. I used to organise students "knit ins" and sadly our contributions were refused, even when we offered them at the time of the tsunami. In the end we donated them to local charities. There is poverty on our doorstep too and the WI are very good at sussing out where help is needed, so is the Salvation Army.
As for Amanda's experience, we have also had plastic bags left on consecutive weeks and found out that some that were left were not charities at all but trades people getting free clothing and then driving them to East European countries not to distribute them, but to sell them!

Hi there!
Just the sound of it makes me fuming! so i cant imagine how angry you must be! We try to be nice and they throw it back in your face, its disgusting!!! it seriously annoys me, I do charitable work for school and that I always give as much as I can when a charity bag comes, I was angry the other day because I had a big bag of stuff for charity as i sorted out my wardrobe we even had extra bags!! Then 2 days after another charity bag came and I was like oh come on this is taking the mick!! Then rather than waste a bag I put the empty bag on the end of the drive for them to collect and use again, and when they came round to collect the bags they gave me a dirty look because it was empty, i felt like saying well just go to my house and take what you fancy!! sarcastically of course but I held my tounge. I cant belive they all turned you away the picky so and so's, yep just smash it to pieces or sell it and donate the money to your charity, or for the grief you have had just keep it, because the charity wouldnt mind the money would they! well thats my rant over! hehe!
best wishes!
Amanda!

u mentioned it had lights?
thats a problem , due to wiring etc.. if someone bought it from a charity shop and they got a shock, they could sue the charity thats why they didn't want it.
or maybe its just too bulkly
i advertise stuff on freecycle, but had the same hassle with an old wardrobe.. these people expect a shop new thing, and half of them are vultures who never put anything up to give away themselves, but always want things.
i wouldn't worry about it, some people want something new for nothing.. if they were in need of it, then u'd have them hammering your door in.

After my House burned, I put melted plastic folding doors out for the garbage men. Only somebody came along and hauled them off before the garbage men got here. Likewise damaged wood and smoked furniture that I didn't want anymore. Didn't even put a sign up for sale or free either. They even took a dead, leaky hot water tank. That was metal for recycle.

Want to here a worse one?
A friend of mine worked in Matalan. they had a heap of kids clothes left over from the sales. All of it brand new. It was gonna get skipped so my friend said 'why not donate it to the red cross or oxfam?' The manager left it in her hands so she made some calls.
Oxfam were delighted to receive £10k worth of kids clothing...as long as Matalan were prepared to pay a £5k sum to cover the cost of shipping the clothes to the countries they were needed in.
Needless to say we were gobsmacked. 'thanks for the massive generous donatio n of kids clothes...but it isnt enough and we want money too'
It's about time that some of these charities remembered that they are charities...not profit making businesses.

I guess they got tired of picking up stuff in not the best of shape. They have an expense too, you know? Gas, or people to come help move stuff.
Relax. Go to www.freecycle.org, join your local club and post an ad. It should be out of your hands in days

Why don't you sell it on ebay. You will probably find somebody who wants to buy it. I would rather do this than give it away to somebody who doesn't want it. Ungrateful pigs.

Put it outside, with a price listed on it.
I will guarantee that somebody will steal it.
