I know there are many frivioulous suits out there, but there are many legitimate suits aimed at correcting a wrong. Recently I had my vehicle damaged through a companies negligent behavior. I contacted the company immediately following the incident and was given the runaround. I am now going to sue for damages which will be right around $220. If you think about all the hassle that company will have to go through with police reports, insurance adjusters, an attorney, and finally going to court 40 miles from their office it surely will have cost them way more than the $220 it'd cost to settle in the first place. Sometimes the decision to sue comes down to principals alone. I'm not trying to take some poor sap to the cleaners. I just believe they should take responsibility for their actions, and the amount I'm allowed by law is the actual damages I incurred, $220 plus court costs. Furthermore, considering the fact that filing a small claim cost about $35 here and the fact that I have nothing to lose (no counter claim), it makes good sense to sue for damages.

I am afraid I will have to agree that Americans are sue happy. However we are not the only ones who want the easy way or who want money without having to work for it. Other cultures do this in different ways.

No matter what anyone says about Americans (and unfortunately some of it is true) I always wonder why so many people want to immigrate here if we are so bad.

I just did jury duty at Cook County courthouse, and they said there are 2.4 million court cases per year. That is for a population of about 5 million people. We have become a society of lawsuit crazy lawyers.

WHAT?!? Where do you get your idea of what Americans like? I've heard so much anti-lawyer sentiment that its a wonder anyone shows their face as a Plaintiff. What I find anti-social is to spew broad generalizations about an entire nation of people.

Well, if there are legitimate reasons for taking a person or company to court then I would, but people like the woman who slipped and feel in a puddle of water and sued the place she was in should be shot...she slipped on water that she has just thrown in her b/fs face. The answer to your question would be $$$$$!

Because we can.As long as our legal system allows these frivolous cases to pay off like a lucky slot machine, there will always be someone to sue.

Because they are vindictive and revenge happy (and it is not just Americans, it is all over).

What swordfighers or gunslingers were in past cultures to get one's own way, the courts are today - it has *nothing* to do with justice anymore.

They want something for nothing and maybe the reason people are taken to court so much is they do not do their jobs correctly.

I doubt it's just Americans. People are greedy, no matter where they live. Most lawsuits are frivolous and purely to steal someone's money.
