I need to paint over tacky wallpaper, do I need to use primer first so the design won't show through the paint? Sorry this is kind of a stupid ? but I have never painted a room before, just want to get the best results. Thanks for all feedback.

Primer is a seal you use to paint over a dark or bright color on the wall. It will allow you paint on a smooth surface. One coat of primer and on coat of you color paint that's all you need.

Actually, you should use another product. There is a "primer of sorts," that is made to paint over wallpaper before painting it with a final color. It goes on clear and dries clear. Then normal paint will not peel off, as can be the case if wallpaper isn't treated properly before-hand.
Go to most home centers and someone there can help you out. I'm sure there are several different types, so some may not go on clear. But they are have the common ingredients to allow you to paint over successfully.

good luck

Primer is used to seal the material your going to be painting. It can also be used to keep previous colors from bleeding through and hide imperfections like water stains. There are several types of primers, each perform a different task. You will need a primer, but not quite yet.

First, you need get as much of the wallpaper off as you can.

Next, use a mud to float, or smooth, the wall.

Last, use a texture as a final cover of the imperfections on the wall.

Now you can primer the wall, and paint your favorite color.

I am not sure painting over wallpaper is a good idea. It may soak up the paint and wrinkle up. If you do paint over it, primer/sealers will cover up the designs and seal it. This will give you one color to paint over so you don't get splotches. You can also have the primer tinted to a color close to the final coat. I like Kilz and Zinsser primer/sealers.
