There is a FAMAS version made or imported by Mitchell arms called the AP-85. It is rimfire .22lr.

To be quite honest when it comes to the French Famas, the French should spend their time making wine instead of Bull pup guns. The Famas was pretty popular among French forces in the late 70's and was the standard military issued weapon in the 80's but you just don't see them in any numbers now, being used by the French military . For those who care to be informed..the Famas prototypes were first manufactured in 1968! The Bull pup design was one of the first, but to the majority of countries worldwide, the Famas wasn't worth the time or attention. The AK-47 is still the #1 machine gun used universally and world wide production is higher than ever. If a weapon as versatile and tough like the AK-47 can be made, and purchased throughout the world for $50-$75 each new.... why would anybody or any government or third world market look at the Famas ? It's very expensive to produce, subject to malfunction under some combat conditions, and parts are hard to find or are not readily available. The Famas is strictly a French weapon. There are no other manufacturers outside of France making them , hence they are hardly a weapon of choice by today's standards.
To answer part #2 of your question, In fact there was a semi-automatic version produced, but U.S. Importers brought very few into the U.S and found that despite advertising heavily, the Famas had little market interest. With subsequent assault rifle bans, they are all but forgotten. That in itself shows it's lack of popularity. With the exception of a few poor South African countries, they along with France are the only ones currently using the Famas. The Famas rates right up there with the Edsel..Francophobic..Hardly.. informed and honest

In regards to the individual trying to show how oh-so cleverly Francophobic he is, the FAMAS was invented in the 1970's and is still in use today (yes, that means as of 2007). Therefore it was not "popular" in the 1960's (it didn't exist) and is still seen in great numbers in the French military as it is their main battle rifle.
As for the question at hand, the FAMAS was indeed made in a semiauto civvie version, but it was imported into the United States in very small numbers. A semiauto FAMAS will set you back four grand easy if you can find one and a select-fire FAMAS would be illegal for you to own since none were imported prior to the Reagan and Bush machine gun and import bans respectively.
The only hope we have is if some American manufacturer gets a license from the French government to produce the FAMAS domestically. Otherwise be prepared to shell out a pretty penny for one.
BTW, glad I was able to correct someone's answer. When it comes to guns, there's a lot of hot air going about, even from supposed ex-armorers. ;)
Oh, and the FAMAS prototype was produced in 1971 and adopted in large numbers in 1978 - the design program began in 1968.
