Your link to his Aunt is very important. Try asking about his school(s), past job(s), friends, hobbies, habits, food, drinking style, did he smoke and if he did, what were his favourite brand? Did he love sport, swimming, women, ... everything you can learn about him. You might be surprised what you can uncover. Little inconsequential things often turnout to be very important links. If your questions fail to help, try the services of a professional detective and if you believe in prayers, pray a lot.

His date of birth will go a long way to help.
People should not assume that things will be traumatic or otherwise. The question you asked was how to do this, not will it be traumatic or not. The Salvation Army will have someone who can act as a intermediery.
Contact the Salvation Army first they do a lot of this type of work even if he is in another country they can help. http://www1.salvationarmy.org.uk/familytracing
Or write to;

Call up this unhelpful aunt again and then ask more details of him, what job does he do what school did he attend, is he re-married, and things like that, what was his last address.
Some information such as births marriages and deaths may be helpful to trace him. For instance he may have married and had more children and there will be records of this type of thing in a file.
The aunt may know more but may not feel able to pass on details, so try not to put too much pressure on her or you may burn bridges.

Hello. I did this sort of investigation to find my sister. But it was a bit difficult since I had to search for her mother.
I looked up the name in the White Pages, and called every single one. Eventually I found her and found my sister's school. Her mom also ran a daycare so I googled her name and the daycare she owned popped up so I was able to get more information.
I agree with the other comment that it is best not to have too high expectations. I thought meeting my sister would be like it is on talk shows. We'd hug and cry automatically have all these things in common. But it wasn't like that. It was weird in so many ways; we were just strangers. Although, I haven't become very close with her, you definitely have that chance wtih your father. I'm sure he's curious about you.
Best of luck.

hi i did this and tried many ways but what worked eventually was that i basically phoned every person with his surname in every country i thought he might be in and eventually i struck a distant relative who gave me some contacts of other relatives who gave me some other numbers etc etc. he didn't have a phone but i managed to get an address and sent a telegram and he called me from a call box long distance and that was the beginning.
be warned, i was pretty traumatise by what i found. best not to expect too much, or best not to hope they will start being a father to you, they may not be, so don't build them up in your mind. be prepared for all possibilities.
it was an expensive phone bill back then but now you have skype or phonecards. it's a good way to eliminate possibilities for a start.

I was in a similar situation,
Have you tried searching birth, death and marriage records.Maybe his auntie can give you names of other family members who could help you find him
You may be shocked at what you find,I found out I had a half sister we knew nothing about each other, she thought I was some crazy physcho and thought I was lying.

Salvation Army might help, but as another answer here points out - whatever happens it might be very traumatic for you both.
After all he left and sadly, as far as he is concerned, that was probably that :( Also, you can have no idea what is happening in his life at the moment so your unexpected appearance might have consequences that are unwelcome.
Good luck in your quest.
