My pick is Jeff Gordon. Check out stats below: 1999-2007
WINS Jeff 37-----Tony 30
POLES Jeff 43----Tony 14
TOP 5's Jeff 125-----Tony 113
TOP 10's Jeff 181----Tony 180
DNF's Jeff 40-----Tony 31
The only stat that Tony has over Jeff is the DNF's
So how can Stewart fans say he is better than Gordon?
The stats are from when Tony started driving NASCAR until yesterday's race.

I am a smoke fan because he has character, charisma and honesty which makes it more interesting and makes him more human. However, I will admit that Jeff has better stats than Tony. You have properly corrected for the fact that Jeff started in nascar a few years before Tony. Based on your stats Tony is behind but pretty close to Jeff on every stat except poles. Tony has never been a great qualifier. Other people doing this sort of comparison have said that Tony would have been better early on if he had started with a team that wasn't as new as joe gibbs racing and with a crew that was more experienced but I don't know enough about crew chiefs and crews to say this is true or not.
I always keep in mind that Tony didn't really start racing anything until he was about 12 or 13 yrs old while Gordon and most other drivers have been racing since they were very young like 5 yrs old.

I think you are misunderstanding. Woman here, loves Nascar, big Jeff Gordon fan, not a Tony Stewart fan. How did you like last week? Wasn't it fun watching him get spun on pit road. Now that I've pissed you off- serious answer- racing wouldn't be fun if everyone liked the same driver. It would be BORING. Sure, not everyone likes Tony, some of us don't like his temper tantrums or the fact that he could cause another driver to get hurt, but that said even the die hard "I hate Tony Stewart" people-I'm not one of them by the way-have the same relationship with him as the Late Dale Earnheart. That should tell you something. Everyone knows the boy can drive. They either hate him because he's good or they hate him because he's "bad". That my friend is the FUN part of racing. Relax, laugh a little, enjoy the fun.

Its a tough call but im gonna go with Stewart just for the fact that Jeff has had a few more years and Stewart started with a brand new team, and stewart can win in anything he drives. His inability to control his emotions is his downfall, but that shouldnt subtract from pure driving ability. Id say if he wasnt so hot headed he would have long surpassed Gordon in every stat except qualifying and DNFs.

The only reason Tony has less DNFs is because Jeff has been racing longer. I agree that Gordon is the better driver because he has more championships and more wins and everything stat wise. He is the best driver currently in Nextel Cup..Go #24!!!!

Stewart is better. You are counting Tony's record since his rookie year, by 1999 Jeff was a seasoned veteran.

Lets also add the numbers for times caught CHEATING!!!

Jeff Gordon by far

I think the best stat to look at is top 10 finishes. Anything can happen out of your control to cause you to tke 2nd or even 5th. 1 poorly timed pit stop (which has nothing to do with driving ability) and you can drop half a dozen spots. if you were to assign points to the stats you provided I think you will find two very equal drivers who's strategies are very different. I think the qualifing stat is useless, why not post average practice speeds?

Jeff is a SMARTER driver. Stewart is a RISK TAKER. So it depends on how you really look at it. Stewart wins because he is no holds barred. Jeff wins because as the drivers say "sometimes you have to drive slow to drive fast". So who is the better driver? Just depends on your preference for smart or exciting.
