What is the difference between AV 1, AV 2... and so on? I just got a new tv and dishnetwork cable and for some reason I can't get the cable to work. Do you think it has to do with the AVs?

AV1 means Audio Video Input 1. AV2 means Audio Video Input 2. Each of these is a separate audio video input where you can connect at least one audio cable (usually two due to most TVs being in stereo now) and one video cable of the RCA connector style (some accept video with S-video connection).

The important thing is did your Dish Network box ever work or is this a new installation that you, yourself, are trying to install? If it is a new installation you should probably seek help from either Dish Network or one of their licensed installers. If it is NOT a new install and it did work then you may have selected the wrong input on your TV.

If it is the wrong input check the following: How does your TV connect to the box? Is it through a single cable going into the antenna, cable or RF input of the TV? It will be marked one of those three names or looks like an antenna seen on top of someone's roof if it is a symbol. For the single cable you probably need to tune the TV to the same channel that the box outputs on usually channel 3 or channel 4 in North America (U.S.). But if the box is connected to AV1 or AV2 which looks like a yellow tipped, a red tipped, and a white tipped cable then you need to select either AV1 or AV2 with the TV's remote. This is usually the video input button or sometimes channel lower than channel 2.

For other types of connections you need to select the right TV input connection for instance HDMI for HDTV sets with High Defintion Dish Network boxes.

Normally the AV buttons refer to reserved channels which are used by VCRs or DVD players. The cable companies don't use these channels and so it is an easy way to tune in the DVD player etc.
