How does one apply for Medicaid? My Mom needs to be placed in a nursing home. She now lives with my Dad in their home with a $220,000 mortgage and no liquid assets. What do I do?

Go to your county social services office. In my county it's called the "Office of Family Support". Tell them of your needs, and one of the workers will give you the application, and possibly assist you with it. Has your Mom been drawing Social Security for her disability? If not, you need to apply for her benefits, which will, of course, go to the nursing home. If she's eligible for disability benefits, she should automatically receive a Medicaid card, depending on financial circumstances.

In most states to qualify for Medicaid you have to be at poverty level or close to it.
Assets are figured on both incomes. Many times all assets have to liquidated,to qualify for state aid long term nursing care.
Are they eligible for Medicare?

Get more information by talking to a long term care facility, they can answer most all your questions for you.
Good luck.

Go online to your state government's webpage. There should be something there about public assistance...be aware though, that in the state of Indiana, the state can take all assets after the death to repay what they have given out in medical support.
