I've been following the 2007 WSOP online, and they sat the last 10 players of the Main Event at one table. But they didn't quit for the evening until they eliminated one more. Only THEN was it considered a final table. If the tables are too small for 10, then why seat them there at all? And if it's a tradition, where did it come from?

It is simply house rules whether the standard table is size 9 or 10. At WSOP it is 9 for the final table. Apparently their tournament rules dictated that rather than have two tables of 5 going on and on watching each other until one player was knocked out so that they would have a final table of 9, they had one table of 10. This way all the action was in one place.

Every tournament has its own rules and standards, this is how the WSOP work. Also people will play just a little looser with 9 players, and this makes for more interesting TV.

Since the "standard" is 9 players to a table, it isn't the final table until you reach that number. I assume that since the tactics change as the number of players drop, a larger size table alters strategy.
