I am not a patter, if I hug a girl that I like it would be a little more of a tighter hug than normal...

A hug is no different than a kiss as for the emotional aspect.
That is to say, a woman might kiss a man on the cheek, which yes, is affection. but a woman who is really into the man, will more likely peck the lips instead.
As a dude,...if I pat a gal, it is a 'friends' thing more so than mate.
If I hug her tightly, it's because I am sincerely interested in MORE than a friendship.
Yes,...the way a person hugs or kisses is a direct reflection of the themselves.
It has nothing to do with 'analysis',...and everything to do with human nature, or in the least,...HIS nature.
aside from perhaps giving you insight into his 'feelings' towards you, it can also display his overall 'style' of affection, another important matter when 'getting to know' someone.
Are you ok with a more 'detached lover/mate'?
If so,...then don't look into it any further.
But it does tend to indicate a person who has issues with displaying their feelings.
That's 'tends' to indicate, NOT stone cold proof. But yeah,...not the best of signs when 'Back Pat' is an issue.

Men tend to pat each other on the back as a sign of affection. It's an accepted form of contact for a man although it usualy goes without the hugging. It is in a way a sign of caring to a man, so he may accidentally pat you on the back whilst hugging without even realising he's doing it. It's a good sign though and one of genuine affection.

When girls hug one another they usually don't pat each other on the back. When "friends" (usually of the opposite sex) hug they do for the most part. Your boyfriend patting your back is a little odd but maybe he's just not conscience of what he's doing or it's his way of letting you he wants to end the hug. Your his girlfriend so I'm sure he cares about you very much, don't think that he's losing interest.

He definitely wants to hug you, that's why he won't let you go. The patting on the back's probably just his personal style of hugging. I'd say he probably likes you. Good luck!!

Well it isn't really just a sign of friendship, it is actually a sign of deep appreciation and a love for that person, so girl friends don't always do that, you will find that a guy with whom you have some kind of connection, although not emotional or physical, might do it to show respect and appreciation

excuse my rudeness to everybody else whos answering, but some of these answers are completely bogus!!
just because guys rub a girls back does not mean we want to pull their bra strap, although some guys do, you have no right to make that assumtion-so i wouldn't listen to her
secondly, everybody sorta has there own way of hugging. I don't think patting somebodies back has a black-white meaning. To some it may be odd, and to some it may be normal.
if your boyfriend pats your back, great for him, he loves you....enjoy it and be happy and return the hug

“If you give your date a hug on the doorstep and he or she pats you on the back, it’s a sign of discomfort,” Daily says. “The more uncomfortable your date feels, the bigger the pat. The other obvious, not-so-great sign is going in for the doorstep kiss—and getting a handshake instead.”
