By unconscious I mean bed ridden and unable to communicate in any way due to a stroke........is there still a possibility that this person would know when someone familiar and significant is present, such as a loved one?

We were told that the last sense is hearing and to treat the person as you would if you knew they were conscious. Talk, chat, as you would with a person who is totally awake but unable to answer.

Another good question glowing in from cyberspace there Mate. I suppose when submission answers results conclude someone has received the accolade for Best Answer, would be, to some degree answers this particular question. Then if I may, as someone has already written those follow-ups through the medium of emails, from those who wish to enter into some degree of contact, by following up with more dialogue. Although I have referred to only those who contact by email in a positive sense and not by those derogatory discourse substitutes. Moreover if a answer is to help someone fix or repaired something then it is even much more rewarding to be selected the best answer in helping someone solve a problem. Yes I do not post many questions and prefer to answer thus gain those incremental points on the ladder in Yahoo questions and answers society. Have a nice life is always nice to say.

Almost certainly. My mother died of a heart attack but as she lay unconcious for a day and a half when we spoke to her, especially when we mentioned my sister who was coming back to the UK to see her, the wavelength on the screen of the equipment monitoring her would change in a very noticable way. Say all the things you would want them to hear Should things go wrong then you will have the peace of mind that they knew how you felt. Good luck .

my mum was in a drug induced coma for several days, she was unconscious and unable to communicate with us but she knew we were there, she would contort her face depending on what we were saying, her heart beat would race or slow down, she definitely knew we were there, it wasnt just wishful thinking.
she has recovered now and has a very mixed memory of intensive care, she can recall some things very clearly but some of the things she says are really 'out there!!' i think we have to remember that while she was unconscious she was in a near death state and some of the things she remembers were absolutely real to her yet absurd to us, she was also full of drugs which affected her mind.
going back to your question, i think absolutely, they can hear and feel you. it is definitely worth telling them your feelings. apart form anything else, it is beneficial to you, you can say things that perhaps you wouldnt if they were aware.
i hope it works out ok for you, never give up, positive thinking is a miracle worker.

Absolutely it's a possibility. The last sense to go in a person is hearing, and unconcious or comatose paatients can often hear the people around them. You should talk to them and sing and play gentle pleasant music.

I am not sure, but I think there might be some sense of presence felt. But frankly, those I know that woke up from coma dont have the slightest idea what had happened to them.

Most times they can here and understand -- so keep on trying to reach them and dont say anything derogatory within earshot or they may give up and let go of life!!!
Tell them good things: how much you love them, cant go on w/o them, need them desperately, etc, etc !!!

It often works like a miracle !!!!

I sure do hope so...

I have heard stories of people being unconcious and waking saying they know who came to see them, or they remember what someone had said.
