I'm just flabbergasted. Are they still living in the dark ages? Are they going to start holding exorcisms, drilling holes in people's heads to 'let the demons out' and burning witches? I'm amazed that in the year 2007 there can still be such ignorance and backward thinking.

gwhiz-so, because there is no 'cure' as of yet-it must be a supernatural cause? That's what I mean by a 'dark ages' mindset-'I don't understand it so it must be magic'. Backwards.

Wolf-I don't really agree with you, but it's an interesting perspective nonetheless.

It is very unfortunate that some people still believe that mental illness is in some form devil possession. My wife of 21 years suffers with Bi-Polar and her first husbands family convinced her 4/5 year old daughter that she was possessed by the devil. That believe at such a young age traumatized the young one to the point that she does not believe in therapy. I can still remember when we first were married that the ex's family with the exception of the grandfather always treated my wife as a outcast and the damage that in sued only drove a wedge between her and her daughter that much more.
It is truly a shame that some people chose to give the devil so much power by believing such none sense.
My wife has been in therapy for this very tough disease and while it is not curable it is treatable and she has done great things in the mean time. however he damage to the daughter is done she still does not believe in therapy and has started to show symptoms of Bi-Polar and will not get help as her mother has.
Lets face it some of the greatest people in history have suffered with mental illness and have done some truly great things for our society

They both exist - mental illness and demonic possession/oppression.
The man in Scripture who lived in the graveyard and couldn't be restrained, whom Jesus set free and said "these can only be cast out by prayer and fasting", that man might be mistaken today as a schizophrenic, but his problem was spiritual.
I've been to many churches who tried to "cast out" my mental illness, obviously unsuccessful in anything but making me think I was intrinsically evil and totally without hope - medication and therapy keep me functional and, in a way, allow me to accept the love of God.
A side pain can be caused by appendicitis, gas, or an ovarian cyst (in a woman). They all present with the same symptoms, but have different causes and different remedies.
I'm beginning to think I should change my username to "longwindedone"...

Good heavens!! I didn't realize that people like that still existed. I'm no psychology expert but I know that mental illness is usually caused by some kind of chemical imbalance in the brain.

I don't know about drilling holes, but people are still holding exorcisms for mental illnesses. There's still a stigma in the general pop. against mental illness, after all.

I am pissed off reading some of these opinions regarding this question. I have BI-POLAR. Do you think I am possessed by DEMONS and SATAN? I sure would like to know because I am also a CHRISTIAN and I don't feel a tug going on in my body or feel like I am going insane. So should I be exorcised because I have a MENTAL ILLNESS!?!?!?

A past HS friend of mine as the mental disease... talks to the voices in her hed, argues with noone, will be nice and sane one moment then spout hateful words the next...
Her family refuses to get her medical attention, and only bring her to "Healing Masses" at their church. They think its an evil spirit in her.
I can't hang around her anymore, she attempted to hurt my (now, ex) boyfriend one time because she thought he took her cross....
first she thought it was me b/c (in her own words to herself) "she's a witch, and god told me that good christains burn and kill witches... but she's my friend and wouldnt do that, right... *pause*..yea I agree"
He jumped in front of me and then she said it must be him b/c he was tanned like the devil... (He's a puerto rican).
Crazy. I feel so bad for her.

I belive in possession. I also belive in mental illness.
sadly they both have the same symptoms.
thats why its good to take an ecletic approach. if the exorcism doesn't work, try the medical treatments
or if the medical treatment doesn't work, try some religious treatment.

You think you've heard it all, but when you read some of these answers justifying their belief that demons and sins cause mental illness, it's really frightening. Religion does poison everything!

Yes - and its tragic. The central message from the work of Freud and co. it that emotional issues can be treated and resolved. No demons, no miricals just hard work and science.
