There have been just over 12,000 servicemembers wounded badly enough that they not listed as "RTD" (Return To Duty) after visiting the field hospital.

You don't hear about this because the number of wounded is very misleading. For example, a person could get a purple heart for getting a large cut in battle or having an arm shot off. An interesting figure for the news to report would be the number of amputees (sadly, there are no accurate estimates at this time, but most estimates say it's somewhere in the 7500 range), very serious injuries. Also, the number of wounded, about 30,000, is misleading because fatal injuries in other wars can now be treated and the injured could make full recoveries.

It's actually been reported quite a bit, as the numbers as a ratio of injured:dead are quite different from previous wars.
Due to advanced kevlar, armor system, eyewear, helmets, etc, the number of soldiers who are injured are a bit higher than in previous wars, but the number of dead are lower (relative to the number 'shot' or 'hit' by an explosion). Advanced eyewear like Wiley-Xs have stopped a number of soldiers from being blind, new Kevlar has resulted in many soldiers surviving being shot (though a bit wounded), and advanced medical facilities in country and fast medevac back to Germany or the US is saving many lives that would have died in previous battles.

do you mean injured all together or from combat? last time i checked i belive it was something like 20,000. i dont know how serious all those were, because the military writes up any visit to a hospital as an injury. i know a guy that smashed his thumb with a hammer and it was recorded statistically as an injury, just like the guys that get blwon up...you probably just have to look at how many purple hearts have been given out to figure out how many ppl have been injured in combat

this information is not given out because the public would be horrified. This situation is like the aftermath of Vietnam, where so many veterans were left on the scrap heap with mental and physical disabilities as a result of the war.
The number is likely to be many, many times the number killed. Your government does not want you to know about this.
