It depends on the culture mostly, some in-laws do not mind being called by their first names say Ben, Mary etc, but others do.then you would have to use say Mrs Smith, Mr Applegate...blah blah blah.
In Africa and most of Asia, the father and mother inlaw are given so much respect-too much sometimes really-that you are not supposed to look or address them directly. There can be no physical contact say shaking hands or hugging.
It is therefor best to find out from your partner how it is done in their family, that way you do not make any blunders.

My parents call thier in laws mum and dad...
I call my in laws by their names, ie maggie and glen and my husband does the same with my folks.
I have a mum and I call her mum so to call someone elses mum "mum" would be too weird for me.
I dont know anyone in my age range ( early thirties) that calls thier in laws mum and dad.

Due to the fact that my in laws were so much older than I, I called them Mr (first name) and Ms. (first name). To use anything else for a southern bred woman with people who were 50+ years older than myself would have been the height of disrespect.

I call them by their first names I sometimes i end up calling my father-in-law dad when i'm talking about him but thats because I respect him like my own father my mother -in-law lost respect from me so i just call her by her first name and when i talk about her to others i call her my husbands mom.

It all comes down to how much respect you have for them..

My In Laws are Indian(im scottish) and the general tradition is for me to call them mum and dad but i dont feel comfortable doing that. So i call my mum in law polly punga when i need to. Polly is her nickname and punga is something like problem/trouble, i say it with affection and love as she is wonderful. I dont think im allowed to call her by her real name as it would be disrespectful. I call my father in law Mr *****. Weird thing is my hubby calls my mum and dad by their first name, so he doesnt do it the indian respect way but expects me to not disrespect his parents that way!! MEN..Double standards or what?

I call my husbands parents Mum and Dad and sometimes I call them by their first names. They don't seem to mind either way. I think as long as you are being respectful it won't really matter.
