Love is an emotion. I suppose an extreme version of this emotion would be called "bliss" or some kind of catatonic orgasm.

True altruism is a fuzzy term. When you talk about helping others without any personal benefit, that is more difficult to define that would be intuitively thought. Even someone who gives his life for another is doing it out of his own self interest. If I place a higher value in someone else than in myself, for whatever reason, I gain pleasure or satisfaction in that other person's sucess, even if it causes personal strife or even death. In that sense, it is still a selfish act to do so. After all, I am giving my life to promote something of my choosing, over other things I could promote, including my own life.
