This is a little late but try not to aspirate his nose so frequently. Please be careful when you do as you can end up causing the nasal passages to swell and increasing the congestion. You can also use a little drop of warm saline water to soften the discharge if necessary so that it is removed more easily. You should remember to only suction the discharge that is visible, not to insert the bulb syringe deeply into the nose.
Yes, it's good advice to call your pediatrician's office for more personal assistance, not knowing how old your child is and all. They may be able to recommend a salve or balm to help protect and heal your son's sore nose, but the aquaphor or triple antibiotic cream would be good suggestions, I think.

Chapstick is the best thing b/c it doesn't go on as thick as regular petroleum jelly or neosporine. I always use chapstick for raw/sore noses and it works like a charm. It goes on as a very thin layer but works....good luck!

Try using neosporin around the outer edge of his nose. Use a q-tip to apply it just inside his nose. Put a little more on at night time. I wouldn't use chapstick though.

I normally use chapstick or petroleum gelly. Both work, but the gelly is thicker so be careful how much you put on. If you use a natural wax chapstick there isn't anything to worry about.

Next time he has a cold buy Kleenex Aloe Vera tissues. They don't irritate the skin and they actually leave a layer of moisturiser on the skin every time you use one. I swear by these and my kids have never had a red sore nose since I discovered these.

Just a little dab of vaseline (like a gloss) will help and won't interefere with his breathing.

Check with your pediatrician. Can you give him a little bit of something like sudafed to help treat his symptoms? Don't do this without asking first, of course...
