John Paul is right on the money, you can pretty much close down you question if you want, there is not much more to say John paul pretty much covered it all.

Look up your local tracks and check their schedules. If they are unclear when there is an open track day than call and ask. The first answerer was very thorough, but I would suggest driving your car stock (with the fresh brake fluid) at first. Improved parts such as brakes and sticky tires can cover up a lot of bad habits in a novice driver that will be easier and less dangerous to correct at lower speeds. Street tires usually give you a bit more "feedback" in terms of sound than your track tires so you can hear when they go from good noise to "I'm about to send you backwards" noise.
Good luck and have fun.

Go on line Bondurant Driver school Skip Barber Racing school. Apex Driving school. And The Drivers Edge.com. I get 145 on the straightaways and corners slow as 40 mph. Hard on brakes so go with fresh brake fluid and properly prepared car. Tech Inspection sheets are available. Take a tire pressure Gage and wheel nut torque wrench extra coolant water mix. And plenty of water to drink. DO you have a helmet and Nomex jump suit? Many tracks will provide you with those. IF you reserve early. There is something about spinning out at speed... Listen to your driving instructor and you will be turning laps by your self by the third or forth lapping session. Some schools are weekend for $275 fifteen minute sessions four or five times a day. Trust me this helps build up your neck and you will be dog tired. Then the next day you can go out and finish off your set of tires and brake pads. Tires brake pads helmet fire suit cost money. Expect to get addicted to speed and start saving up for the next drivers school. Bigger brakes better wheels tires and five point seat and shoulder belts...$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Check out local Mustang or Cobra clubs. Down here the Cobra club in SC rents the racetrack and are able to run some laps depending on safety equipment
