Determine what the customers want through research, surveys, focus groups, etc. Determine what the competition is offering. Determine what needs to be in a new product to win the customers over. Set pricing, packaging, positioning, placement, etc.

My opinion of this has changed dramatically recently.
I used to think it was all that mattered. But now I think it's mostly product quality (to get the 'pass along to friends' effect).
However, I still can't get over the MSFT vs. Apple and local awesome pizza place vs. Domino's conundrum. It's tricky, but I guess it's produce the best & market the heck out of it. Without either,it's not gonna fly..
