Well, generally they do a check for color, specific gravity, pH, nitrates, blood cells, and sugar. That tells them a bit about how well the kidneys are functioning and if there is an infection of some sort, or if you could possibly be diabetic, or are dehydrated. They can culture urine and see what bacteria grow to determine exactly what is causing an infection. They can also do drug testing, but that's usually done only if they need to determine if you are on something, for medical reasons only. To do a legal drug urinalysis, you have to be fully informed and there are other requirements that have to be met to control the whole process. I assume you mean the usual doctor request, though. For the most part, there's no drug screening involved. The routine urinalysis is just a quick check, usually done with dipstick paper, and tells you a bit about how things are functioning. The microscopic exam tells you about infections and bleeding, and diseases like gout. And when they do the microscopic, you can also learn things you didn't really want to know. I've seen sperm in the urine from a female, which tells me what you can figure out as well. You can also do a pregnancy test with urine, and the routine control check for pregnancy tests use male urine. Since presumably males can't get pregnant, a positive pregnancy test with urine from a male means either your testing is off, or it wasn't from a male donor.

It can be used to check for bladder/kidney/urinary tract infections, or keytones(sugar) which might indicate diabetes, or proteins which could indicate kidney problems. It can also be used for a preliminary pregnancy test, or to check for hormone levels.
It could be needed to check for blood in the case of kidney stones.
And it is possible to check for the use of some drugs through a urine test.
So if a doctor has requested one for you, ask them what it is they are trying to find out.
