I want to become a bone marrow donor and I have a few questions. I have already researched about it, so I would prefer personal experience.
1] how long does it take for them to take out the marrow?
2] what do the scars on your hips look like?
3] how do you feel after the procedure? Like, what is the pain equivalent to?

If you have any tips, or want to share any information with me, feel free to do so. :]

I think you have to be a bit older to sign up as a donor in the registry. Unless you're already matched for a family member or something.

1. It doesn't take very long really. Maybe a couple of hours at most and you're under anesthesia for the pain.

2. The scars are no bigger than probably half an inch.

3. After the procedure, you'll fell a dull ache in your lower back. Like after a long day of hard work in the yard.

I've only had a bone marrow biopsy done which only requires them to take bone marrow out of one spot. I believe a donation requires 5 or 6 areas. You'll forget the pain in no time when you compare it to the feeling that you're saving a life.

I was a recipient of a cord blood transplant because there wasn't a bone marrow donor in the registry that was a match for me...not too many ethnic donors. Please donate if you can.

well from what i know they don t knock you out and it is one of the most painful things you can go through...

I found this site check it out typed a search." what is it like to donate bone marrow and this is what came up....

How do you donate bone marrow?

You can start by joining the registry at the National Marrow Donor Program, which lists all the willing donors. Doctors are able to look on that registry to see if you have the needed blood type.

The process of donating bone marrow requires surgery. After you're put to sleep (general anesthesia), a special needle is used to get the marrow from your hip bone. You may get a transfusion of your own blood, which you can donate before surgery.

How long does the procedure take?

The surgery takes only a few hours, but you may be in the hospital for several days to recover.

What are the risks?

Like any other surgery, the common risks are infection and bleeding. You may need a blood transfusion (if you donated your own blood before the surgery, you will receive that first). There is also a very small risk of injuring other organs. Other risks, including death, are very rare.

Donating bone marrow may save someone's life, so it can be very rewarding. Start by joining the national registry.

Good luck to you what a wonderful person you are. this planet is blessed to have you here...

i think of that that's going to be required. That way a kin member does not could bear the brunt of grief and or argument with different kin approximately making a selection. they purely use what they'd the deceased is dealt with with comprehend, and we don't lose precious time whilst somebody is him hawing around determining what the deceased would have needed. when you're lifeless you have not any use on your actual physique areas and individuals are death daily who're on waiting lists to receive and there are actually not adequate donors. i'd think of your loved ones would be proud to understand you cared adequate to save yet somebody else. And opposite to what the action pictures romanticize, the receiver does not initiate appearing such as you or sending messages on your loved ones from the pay attention after. records are stored exclusive so grateful human beings do not save contacting your loved ones. they'd thank God yet not your loved ones in individual. in case you necessary a kidney would you prefer to die on a waiting record???????? i does not. sign the returned of your drivers licence and enable all your pals and kin understand and inspire everyone else you recognize to do an identical.
