People suggest to have guns for their protection, what is your reason to have a gun/weapon IN YOUR PLACE?. This question is for those who live in the West. I can understand having a gun in Mogadishu neighborhood or Baghdad, but what the heck in....?

My best friend and her husband live out in the middle of nowhere in northern California. If someone tried to break into their home, there's no way the police would get there in time. They're about twenty to thirty minutes outside of civilization. They enjoy having the protection of a gun.

As soon as I can afford it, I'd like a gun, too. Police sometimes deter crimes, and sometimes they stop crimes as they're happening, but most of the time the respond to crimes that have already occurred. That doesn't do me any good if a rapist breaks into my house tonight. And the point is that you don't need to know why I want to have a gun. It's my right.

1. I have quite a few guns.
2. I have them for a variety of reasons to include self defense. While I have never been forced to shoot someone, there have been several occasions in which the mere possession of a firearm has either stopped the situation from escalating or convinced someone that maybe just maybe they had somewhere else to be and something else they should be doing.
3. For all of you guys that are spouting off about this guys question in a negative manner please remember that these are some of the reasons that people tend to believe that those of us that own guns are "gun nuts" and have been or will be " that guy" that shoots some one for either no reason or a very bad reason. As responsible gun owners it is our responsibility nay duty to ensure that the public knows and understands that we have a right to keep and bare arms and to ensure that we continue to have the right. When those of us who own guns get mad or mouth off about people that dont like that fact we only encourage the belief that we are a bunch of crazy people bent on death and destruction and that ALL guns should be confiscated and destroyed. Please remember that when answering questions of this nature in the future.

Talking about my present firearm situation is not your business, but I will tell you that it is something I have done in the past. Over my 42 years on this planet I've owned and used firearms for over 20 of those years as a private citizen. During that time I have prevented two people from getting serious beatings and possibly prevented a few other crimes.

A friend of mine (female) had a boyfriend who liked to knock her around when he was displeased with her. One time he flew into a rage and started hitting her in front of me. I drew my .45, chambered a round, held my pistol in a non-threatening manner, and simply said "STOP" in the most commanding voice that I could. Suddenly his uncontrollable rage morphed into a controllable fuming and all violence ceased until the police I'd called at the beginning of the argument arrived.

I saw a guy getting beaten by four guys outside my window. I called the police, then carried the same .45 concealed, and went out and asked the guy if he needed any help. They stopped hitting him, and the guy cowed by his attackers said that he was "fine". I stayed and watched, and ensured that the interaction remained peaceful until the police showed up about ten minutes later.

Let's face it, the police are ALMOST NEVER there when a crime of violence is comitted. This is obviously because criminals normally decline to commit crimes when the police are around. Even if someone is close enough to a phone to call the police when something starts, it takes them 15-20 minutes or longer for the police to show up, and if the police don't KNOW to show up you're just plain screwed.

Both of the above situations occured less than a mile from the main police station in a fairly quiet neighborhood, and still it took 15 minutes for them to show up. That is MORE than enough time to beat someone to death.

Yes, I carry and use guns for my protection, my families protection, and even for my neighbors' and society's protection. Two people have dramatically less injuries, and possibly are alive, because I had (used) a firearm.

Obviously, some common sense precautions are in order when using/keeping firearms. My kids do not have access to my firearms if they're around. If alcohol of ANY type or quantity is being used, they are kept locked away, preferably at another location. Lastly, If you don't have the ability or temperment to use a firearm, you should leave them alone as well.

Sorry, you don't have the need to know that information.

Nor does Hillary, or Mayor Bloomberg, or the ACLU, or the Brady bunch, or the Governor of my home state.

In the U.S., the police are NOT required to provide protection for anyone -- the Supreme Court made that determination years ago. So, if you have someone banging down your door with intent to cause harm, you are responsible for PROTECTING YOURSELF. Now, after a career in the military, I can do a pretty good job in hand-to-hand combat. But my wife and children are a different story. And firearms are the great equalizer.

So go take your gun-control BS to another forum, because it is flat-out wrong.

ok libturd im not telling you how many I have but lets just say i have tools for defense and tools for sport, but why shouldnt I have a right to protect myself in case a dirtbag should try to come break in.
so to ask this of you. what would you do if a rapist or murderer were to break in your house and threaten th safety of your household what you gonna do? call 911? is that gonna save your life? Know of a actual case where douche bag breaks into to ladies house who was alone, looking for cash well she heard him grabbed the phone and ran into bathroom locked the door and called 911. well while she was talkin to em he kicked in the door and shot her point blank! she died! so what if she had on her person a 12 gauge shotgun or a .357 mag or a kimber 45 acp handgun? when he kicked in the door she could have shot him and saved her own life!
so your ways as retarded as they are would not have saved her. so you are wanting your fellow man to become victims and give up and die at the hands of any intruders or attackers wherever we are.

I an glad to have several, and after the events of Hurricane Katrina I know I need to protect myself. I've taken several gun courses taught by a rangemaster who has very impressive credentials, keep my weapons under lock and key, and shoot responsibly. Latino gangs have sprouted in my neighborhood, and THEY have plenty of guns. God forbid we have a natural disaster or terror attack, either. I have a way to obtain fresh meat and protect myself and my property. I am female, live alone, and am VERY liberal in every other way. .

I have more than a few guns. I collect older military firearms. My weapons range from a 17th century French matchlock to a first generation M-16. I have my FFL just so I can persue my hobby. I enjoy my collection and keep it displayed. I also have a concealled carry permit, and carry a .45 caliber Colt Commander.

I don't hunt so I don't pretend to keep a gun or guns for that reason. I keep them because it is my right and for all the people who clam we are living under a dictatorship I and a lot of other citizens keep them for the day when that might really happen..
