Actually statistically you have a greater chance of being molested by a public school teacher than by a priest.
(But this truth doesn't fit the socio-political template of our information disseminators.)

Yes it is digesting.
Yes, it's more disgusting because they are supposed to be faithful to God.
The idea that they attacked choir boys is misleading. Most of the cases are that of pederasty, which is a homosexual problem..not pedophilia. This does not make the abuse okay...just pointing out that it's not the molestation of children, nor the perversion called pedophilia.
Additionally, many of these cases are as old as 50 years. Again, this is not to justify, but to point out that 50 years ago we did not have the laws, nor the resources in place to deal with this sort of thing. Not just in the church but everywhere. It was a taboo subject which afforded perverse people all sorts of protection because no one wanted to talk about it. It was not unusual to just move the perpetrator (not just Catholic clergy, but all clergy as well as educators etc.) to another location. Again, not a justification, just saying that this was the m.o. of the times.
When I was in public middle school in the early 70s I was sexually attacked by a school girl a few years older then me ( I was 11). My mother went to the school administration, and they did nothing. They refused to do anything. I realize the perpetrator was also a child, my point is how the administration handled it.
Additionally, I had sexual advances made towards me (I'm sure it happened to others) when I was 13 by two different teachers. Finally, my parents just put me in a private school.
All I'm trying to point out is that times were different then. No one talked about sexual abuse. There just weren't the resources nor the information that we have now. Again...I am not trying to justify at all...it is a horrible act and continues to be so...the victims never recover from such betrayal. I just get tired of the Catholic Church being portrayed as the only place this happens. It's not. It has happened and continues to happen in many churches, schools, sports organizations, and homes.
Some of the priests who joined the priesthood back then were homosexual. It was a place they could come to be homosexual. They were not men of God but men of perversion. The screening process then did not look for this type of problem, so many of them were let in. They now are working to stop this.

Isn't it kind of an obvious statement to say that it's a terrible thing that happened? I read that part of the question and just went "Duh...yeah."
Not sure about the tip of the ice burg or seeing more come to light. Just about every study done on this has shown the percentage of priests that have molested children is on par with the percentage of people of pretty much any other profession.
I'm sure we'll see some new cases pop up, but not enough to make it another rush like we had when the story first came out. I feel sad for most priests as this has done damage to their church and their livelihoods. As always, we'll pray for healing. And I'll pray the perception of priests changes. It saddens me to think people might look at a priest and automatically think "pedophile." Many great friends have been hurt by this.

Everyone thinks these crimes are terrible.
I think that most of the cases have now come to light but a few may still crop up.
In every population of human beings are going to a few sick or evil people who commit horrible crimes, even in the Church.
These few terrible people do not negate the faith, hope and love of over one billion Catholics.
Remember that the Church is not the Church hierarchy or the priests. The Church is God and His relationship with over one billion living Catholics on Earth and God only knows how many in heaven, all of whom make up the Body of Christ.
Remember that political scandals in nations, even up to and including the highest leaders, like President Nixon and the Watergate scandal, do not make the nation as a whole wrong, immoral, or worthless. And the Catholic Church is so much holier and more important than any nation.
With love in Christ.

You aren't a complete fool are you, how many of those cases do you expect to be true.
You couldn't possibly believe that every priest is a perv and I wonder how many have gone to jail because someone talked their kid into getting some money for momma or pappa.
And yes it is disgusting.
