Hi all,
I would like to hire a car whereas I am 20 and I past my licence last january in France. Old cars are welcomed:) I have already found a place where I can hire a camper (http://www.wickedcampers.com.au/) but the first plan was just a little car which doesn't consum a lot of petrol... I have already checked a lot of websites so every major compagnies don't rent to people of my age in Australia.
So you are my last chance!
Thanks a lot for your answers!

Thanks every body for yours answers!
First answer: unfortunately, no car insurance coverage by my mastercard
Second answer: I know that it will be very expensive but I am flying back home the next day I will arriver in Melbourne and in two weeks we don't want to loose time by searching a car to buy (how can you be sure that the car will be ready for travelling? How to contract an insurance for 2 weeks?...)
Third answer:
http://www.standbycars.com.au/hotdealsqa.aspx: Impossible, you have to be over 21 to "relocate"
http://www.rentabomb.com.au/terms.html: Impossible,I have my driver's licence for less than 2 years...
And I couldn't find the pages of "rent a wreck" about australia...if somebody can help me:)
I think that I have already found somewhere in Cairns where to rent a car but the problem is that the small shops don't rent for one-way...But I will try to call them to be sure:)
But if any names come into your mind, don't forget me please!

Fifth answer:
Thanks for sharing your experience: I have found this site today but I have first to check if there is no minimum about how long I have the licence. They seem a little bit cheaper compared to Wicked campers for the same quality without the funny paintings on it:) But the fact is I prefer to rent a car if I could:)

Sixth answer: Yes I know that buying a car can be cheaper, but staying 1 week to search a car within two weeks of travelling...that is not holidays! It is better to stay in Cairns and to fly back... Backpackers campervans rent campervan for 18+ without one-way fee for the Breezer but I should have my licence for more than one year...
PS: I would like to rent a car for 12 days.

Once I rented a campervan from Backpacker Campervans - belongs to Britz, but cars are usually 3-4 years old. Anyway, they are in very good shape and I had no single problem driving 8000 km.
"How old do I need to be to drive a campervan?
The minimum driving age for the Nomad, Wanderer and Off-Roader 4WD is 21 years, and the Breezer is 18 years."
from: http://www.backpackercampervans.com.au/cheap-campervans/413/Backpacker+FAQs.aspx#OLD
If this car is not what you're looking for, since Britz rents cars to under 21 year old, keep on searching. Your chances might not be so low!

If time doesn't matter think about buying a car (or better a campervan) and selling it at your final destination. You can get a check at a officially accredited garage for some 30-40 AUD. They will tell you if it's worth buying.
My personal opinion is, best way of travelling is by campervan - sleeping and cookin an board. And about distance: I made 8000 km on my own in less than a month without any problems. So if you are two drivers: NO WORRIES of a few hundreds of km more!

If you managed to find someone willing to rent to you it will cost you a fortune. One-way car hire is very expensive as you have to pay for the car to be returned to Melbourne. On top of that the insurance for someone your age will be prohibitive.
You would be far better off buying a car in Melbourne and selling it when you got to Cairns. You might lose a little on the transaction but it would cost you a lot less than hiring.

I live in Cairns mate and the best thing for you to do is come here with your friends and chill out for a few days. So many bag packers here i guarantee Youl meet plenty of people. Lots of tourists (bag packers) end their trips in Cairns just like you are starting yours here, they sell their cars cheap and there is plenty of them around. If you call into the many back packer hostels around here and ask around you will find a car on the cheap and remember to never take first offer. And if you play your cards right when you sell it down south you could get your money back or run at a small lose, better than renting cost you a fortune. Keep 1 week up your sleeve for car finding in cairns and yowl be right mate.

while you're in basic terms staying in Dublin, hiring a vehicle is actual a foul theory - a lot much less complicated and extra low-fee to apply the popular public delivery it is attainable, and parking in Dublin city centre is a substantial discomfort interior the proverbial. in any different case, vehicle hire companies often have a coverage of hiring to those who're over 21. besides, your guy hasn't had his licence long sufficient, you may desire to be in possession of an entire licence for over a 300 and sixty 5 days until now this is seen a international licence.

as far as i know noone will rent a car to under 21 because of the insurance problems. you can check the minor car rental companies but they would probably require a credit card bond of at least $5,000 for deductible in case of accident.
you could also check your credit card company and your travel agent or travel insurance coverage company to see if they will provide you with car insurance coverage.

My brother used to have a campervan business in NZ - we was always looking for people to drive them back to 'bass'. (most of the time is was me bugger it all) but I think you may have a problem with your age. Insurance is alot higher for under 25's.
Anyhow you can only but try.
What about - http://www.standbycars.com.au/oneways.aspx?cid=1 One way deals and a time frame to do it in.
Only other option is to try the small unknown car rental company's - in other words don't go for Avis, Hertz etc - they are more expensive anyhow. Go to the local small business. There are alot right in the city (Esplanade and the other end of the night markets), usually in with the visitor center's... sorry I can't think of their names.
oh you could also try http://www.rentabomb.com.au and http://www.rentawreck.com/about.html

It's one hell of a long drive. I'd suggest doing backpacker hostels and buses.
