It probably will yes. Being plastic, the cards are waterproof.
9 times out of 10 when a punter brings a faulty Oyster to me, its stopped working because its got a hefty crack in it. Usually due to it being kept in a back pocket and being sat on. They're basically built like a chip and pin credit card, except the chip is inside not out, and there's an internal aerial wrapped round the inside so the gates can read the chip.
If it doesn't work, take it to the first open ticket office you see, and they'll get you to fill in a form and then replace it for you. Assuming you registered it when you got it, if not then you're lost and you'll just have to get a new one.
EDIT: Just came back to read through the other answers. Any crack in the card will render it useless, even if its not on the chip, because as I said there's an aerial looping around the inside of the card, and if you break that then it won't work.
As for plastic wallets - you can get them for free from any ticket office, just ask!

We use similar cards in various transit systems in the U.S.
As long as the area where the chip is located is undamaged (not cracked) then the card should work. I don't know if the chip location is visible in the Oyster Card (it would be a small slightly raised area).
The best thing to do is to try it and if if won't work follow the necessary process to have the card replaced (I assume you did register it).
One thing I would suggest - buy a small plastic card holder if you can. That way the card will be more protected.

Depends if the magnetic influence from the machine has wiped the information stored on the card or not.
Good luck.
