See dry ice melts at about the same speed as water ice, but because it's made of liquid carbon dioxide, when it melts it evaporates as carbon dioxide mixing with the air, and leaves no evidence behind.
However, there is a flaw in the riddle: The riddle begins that the guy brought a bag back from the grocery store, but it ends to say there was absolutely nothing in the room. What happened to the bag?
Also, if there is nothing else in the room besides the man, what did he hang himself with?
I predict that the dry ice was transported in a hessian bag of calico, and on arriving home he untied the bag making it into a single thread with which to hang himself with, standing on the dry ice till it melted.
For those who have tried to hang themself before, you may know the physical pain that is endured when a rope slowly constricts around one's neck, so I also predict that the guy purchased a small bottle of water, sleeping pills, pain killers, and a whole lot of other drugs that he would take before returning to said house, throwing the packaging in a public garbage can. It takes between 20 and 40 minutes for most pharmaceutical drugs to begin working, which would give the guy more than enough time to set up his death trap and leave this world painlessly.
For those who oppose suicide on any and all grounds, consider the possibility that the guy had just been diagnosed with a terminal, untreatable, incurable, excrutiating, and fatal disease, and was given mere hours to live. Consider that he was already in unbearable constant pain, and had no family or friends to turn to for comfort, and that his one love in this world was giving people the thrill of solving a great puzzle or riddle, just as he was given in his prime as a crime scene investigator many years earlier.

Now, I would say a block of ice, but the melted puddle would have counted as something, instead of nothing so it can't be that. Ok, I have an idea but it's really stupid and probably incorrect, but, whatever:
He bought some food, loads of it. He laid it in a pile and stood upon it and put the rope around his neck. He got some friends or animals to eat the food, leaving nothing for him to stand on. He died and the people/animals fled the scene, leaving nothing.

the guy went to buy a giant ice cube, then he stood on top of it and as the ice melts he hangs himself, so when the cops get in theres nothing in there and the water's dried up.
