or should you just do them with a flat chest

they make you gain and tone muscle but they dont burn any fat.
everybody has a little six pack underneath the layer of belly fat and you can see it only by lowering your body fat percentage.
the only fat burning exercise is cardio.

Any exercise that elevates your heart rate (cardio) done long enough WILL 'cause you to lose weight. However, crunches are a very inefficient way of doing this, and they are done mainly to strengthen the abdominal muscles.

Crunches tone up your ab muscules so it's not all flabby. So you might weigh the same but look better because muscule weighs more. But you body fat mass will go down. :3

umm na not really, u will just build muscle uneathe, you prolly want to do some with weights on ya chest, and maybe in a hot gym room, so u can sweat and burn cals

no, i dont think so...but if you have quite a bit of extra fat on your stomach, it will only make it worse...you should only do crunches if you're stomach is relatively flat already.
