I disagree that Jews are a race. Being Jewish is an ethnic background, just like I'm Irish, but I'm from America. It also is the same word used to describe a religion, unlike "Irish" so it gets confusing and many people get uppity about it. It is TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. Ethnicity (Jews are from Jeruselum and were spread out throughout history all over the world in many diasporas) and Judaism is a religion. Many Jews are not religious, therefore, are Ethnically Jewish, as I will always be ethnically Irish, but are religiously something else. Two things, same word, much confusion.

Whew...
That's a big question. Judaism is an identity that is based on an ethnic group, specifically those tracing their lineage in Biblical terms back to Abraham and his son, Aaron. Jesus and his family were Jews from Bethlehem. Their probably is not much "racial" difference between a so-called "Palestinian" and a Jew, other than the fact that many Palestinians have Arab blood, as well. The Jews were enslaved, freed and wandered the world(in many places)intermarrying and converting others until the creation of the state of Israel in 1946.

They aren't a recognizable "race": there are Black Ethiopian Jews, Red-haired Russian and Irish Jews and I have a blonde blue-eyed friend who is a Jew by conversion/assimilation.

Not a Jew myself, but love their history and language.

Judaism is a religion- not a race or ethnicity.

How is a Jew defined by the different sects?
Reform: Jewish parent (either) or conversion to Judaism
Conservative: Jewish parent (either) or conversion by Conservative or Orthodox
Orthodox (the bunch of us that still keep the entire Torah and Oral law): Jewish Mother or Orthodox conversion

Jews can be from anywhere and of any race- there are black Jews (such as from Ethiopia, Kenya and Yemen), Chinese Jews (there used to be a Synagogue in Singapore, but the Jews left and it is maintained as a historic site but is no longer functional, there is a synagogue in Hong Kong, but that mainly services visitors), Indian Jews (mostof whom have moved to Israel), Arabic Jews (fromIran, Iraq, Israel, Yemen, Morocco- the majority of whom (over a million) were forced to flee their native countries in 1948 and now reside in Israel) and so on. Thus there are multiple cultures (Jews from different areas tend to have different types of food, customs, styles of dress etc) though they all adhere to the halachah (Jewish law)

Judaism does not recognise other religions. What does that mean? Essentially Judaism says once a Jew, always a Jew- you cannot go back from it. So you can practice any religion you want (and in democratic countries, including Israel) nobody is going to stop you, but in the World to Come you will be judged as a Jew. What this also means is that if a Jew should err, and convert to another religion, they do not need to convert back to Judaism (in Orthodox, reform is actually stricter in this; since they do not follow the Halachah, they see conversion as leaving Judaism- and thus the need to convert back), but just need to repent and come back to Judaism- some Rabbis also require them to immerse in a mikveh (ritual bath)

Speaking as a knowledgeable Jew, Jews are **not** a race. Period. There are Jewish groups in Asia, Africa, India--how much more multi-racial could you want (apologies to Native Americans--I don't think there are large Jewish populations there). These groups have existed for hundreds of years.

Don't worry about history class--this isn't taught there anyway.

Did you pay attention to vocabulary ?

A race is a group of people with absolutely nothing to do with Nationality... (or living in one nation)

However, they lived in Israel since before... the Greek civilization and during the Romans their land was ruled by Romans...... they were spread out to surrounding lands throughout time, but mostly it began with the Babylonian take over.

Maybe you should just read the bible... or a history text...

Scattered. Iraq and Iran since the Babylonian and Persian conquests. Barcelona was an intellectual center for centuries. They have been kicked out of every country in Europe at some point: the Germanic states where Hebrew and German became Yiddish; Spain, where Castillian and Hebrew became Ladino. The list goes on.

Jews aren't a "race" anyway.

Jews are religious believers. They come from many ethnicities now, primarily European and Middle Eastern (Ashkanazi and Sephardic).

They definately "come" from Israel, however. Historically Jews lived in Israel over 2000 years ago, and were then dispersed.

The Romans called it Palestine.

You will find a description of Israel, Northern and Southern kingdom, in the bible.

The term Jews comes from Judah part of the Southern Kingdom.
