The closest word in english language that describes "Shraddha" is FAITH.
Shraddha is total, unconditional, unquestionable, absolute belief. for eg. a child has such a belief in his/her mother, a child never questions the mothers intentions, has complete faith in her that she shall take care of and protect him/her come what may.
Shraddha is an attribute which us adults have long forgotten in this materialistic world in the name of rational and reason. I dont say tht reason is bad or should be abandonded, but in matters of heart and God one should have devotion and faith as of a child on his/her mother.

Shraddha or obsequies, is the Hindu ritual of treating people to feasts in the name of the deceased.
Traditionally sons or relations of the deceased observe shraddha. But one can hold the shraddha even of oneself before one's death.
Shraddha can be of three types: adyashraddha (early obsequies), abhyudayika or brddhi shraddha (emerging obsequies offerings) and sapindikarana (yearly obsequies rites).
The early obsequies are held after purification from defilement and lasts for 11, 15 or 30 days depending on the caste. During the period, relations of the deceased only take vegetables, protein-less food, and sunned rice without salt. Sons of the deceased shave their head on the day prior to shraddha and observe various rituals.
On the day of the obsequies, they treat relations, neighbours etc to a feast prepared according to their means.
In the past, moneyed people invited thousand of guests to shraddha feast. But this has changed. People also donate clothes and other items to Brahmins and relations.

Shraadh is a Sanskrit word which literally means anything done with sincerity and faith (shraddha is the Sanskrit word for faith). In the Hindu religion, the term denotes the ritual that one performs to paying homage to one’s deceased ancestors (Pitri), and especially to one’s deceased parents, either on the anniversary of their death or during the dark fortnight called Pitri Paksha (usually falls in September or October, or both).
