You ask good questions, and I asked similar questions myself when I first considered the idea of a universe with no god. But who says the law of the land doesn't matter? Who says atheists have "no moral compass"?
Although this is a common belief, there's really no basis for it.
There are other very good reasons for continuing to act in a moral fashion. One of course is that there ARE laws of the land and you will be punished if you don't obey them. A second is that, if you want to have friends and family, you will have a better chance of keeping them if you behave honestly and with integrity. Human civilization is built on group cooperation.
There are millions of people all over the planet (including Europe, China, and Scandinavia) who do not believe in the Christian god and virtually all of them conduct themselves according to the basic rules of civilization.
You might pick up Richard Carrier's book, "Sense and Goodness Without God" if you are interested in the atheist point of view. Bertrand Russell's books are classics as well and I highly recommend them.

Not sure where you get this idea that atheists believe there is no purpose to life. Also what do laws and morals have to do with religion? So without religion you would just go wild killing, robbing, raping, pillaging? Laws and morals are created by societies and have little, if anything to do with religion. If your only purpose in life is to worship your imaginary friend then you live a sad life indeed.

I have to agree with soundofsettling.
I'm not an atheists I'm a pantheist but listen to me closely.
You truly need to learn more than what you have been taught. I'm not being mean or silly. It is truly sad the number of close minded people on R&S. Don't be a coward! Learn to think for yourself, and learn something more, than your one sided view of the world allows.

what a strange question. why do you think atheists believe life has no purpose. Life IS its own purpose. Your assertions on crime are so out of the blue its hard to understand where you are coming from.

Just because you don't believe in God doesn't mean that you don't have morals, emotions, or guilt. You can live for something without it having to be supernatural. You can live for your children, your friends, hell even for your puppy. Love isn't exclusive to those who worship a ghost.

Unlike those who act out of fear of punishment, there are people who actually live ethically and morally, rather than respond to reward and punishment.

you're funny.
any living things that live in the earth want to surive.
in order to surive, we need some rules that help us.
stealing ,killing and destory don't not serve any purposes in survival unless you need it to stay alive.
