Well, for our official Church beliefs please check out www.lds.org.
The full name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is called the Church of Jesus Christ because that is whose church it is, and the Latter-day Saints is only to distinguish it from the early Church formed by Jesus Christ in His time. The LDS comes from the first letter of L in Latter, D in day, and S in Saints.
If I tell you my point of view on polygamy, it will be an opinion. I believe that Joseph Smith received a revelation about polygamy as a direct precursor to a revelation about the Civil War. It is my opinion that it has a direct tie back to the reason polygamy was lived in the Old World, that is to say, in Israel and the region around there. The Jewish people had a custom that if a man died and left his wife behind, the man's brother was honor bound to marry the wife, even if he was already married, to raise up children on behalf of the deceased brother (for example, see Genesis 38:8, or even better might be the story of Ruth in the Book of Ruth, chapters 3 and 4 especially). In fact, children were so important that a man could marry more than one wife if he could support them. Several good prophets in the Old Testament lived the law of polygamy, including Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I think it is interesting that the Mormons were driven west as much as 13 years before the start of the Civil War. They needed a way to help build up the Church with a strong membership, and they needed a way to help provide for widows and other sisters who were having a hard time finding a righteous man who had already joined the Church. In my opinion polygamy was only meant to be a temporary principle. In fact, it was ended by prophet number four, Wilford Woodruff, by revelation in 1890. Anyone practicing it today is not considered a true member of the Church, and if they attempt to do so, they are subject to ex-communication. I often tell people on this site, that in the Millennium after the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, that all of the family ties will be worked out. If someone died young or in a war (even the Civil War) they will still have the blessing of marriage and family. If some of the plural wives found someone else, they were allowed to end their polygamous marriage and marry someone else. In fact, although I do not have references, I found that to be the case just based on casual research while writing a play. I have four or five great-uncles and uncles who died young or before being married in this life, but I believe that God treats all His children fairly, and there is someone reserved for each one of them. In my opinion, if the Civil War had never happened, a certain number of men would have joined the Church instead of dying in battle, and polygamy would probably have not even been necessary. In other words, they would have been around to have children and raise them themselves, instead of having someone else to raise those extra families. This is again, an opinion, and it certainly can't be proved until the Millennium when everyone is resurrected. I do know, having read accounts of ancestors, that polygamy didn't work too well with several of my ancestors. And again, anyone living it or attempting to live it today is absolutely not part of the official Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Because we believe in having a living prophet, ongoing revelation means that the Lord can stop and start policies, programs, and practices when the time changes. The practice of polygamy covered approximately 20 years before the Civil War, and approximately 25 years after the end of the Civil War, and that was enough. Have a happy day, and I send you a gummy bear.

Maybe you won't get a mormon to answer your question, I WAS a mormon for 30 years, they believe that satan and Jesus are brothers, that man can evolve into gods and goddesses, they have two theologies, one for the temple goers and one for the ones who have not been in the temple, they believe that Cain's MARK is black skin, and that the MARK of the indians is also dark skin from their Book of Mormon tale which is suppose to be a second witness to Christ, that during the htrr days christ took to resurrect himself, he showed up in North America to a vast civilization that lived in North and South America, but there is no ruins to prove that and the indians are from the Jews that came over in a boat 600 years ago. That Ham's wife was black and thats how the black people survived the flood. Oh they look good on the outside, but they have some pretty strnage beliefs, like God's name is Elohim and lives on a planet name Kolob with all his many wives.

The Mormon church is a joke. If you look at their Utah holy land you will see that more and more "members" of their church are converting and/or walking away from that religion. Its built upon lies and fallacies. Even today though they claim to have one of the most populous religions in the world, their precious state is less than 50% members.
Look into their history and when you question things they will use common interrogation tactics of diverting, casting blame, and question your faith among them. Its a joke.
As for multiple wives.... apparently Ole Joseph Smith recieved divine revilation revealing to thim that god wanted man to take more than one wife while in the mortal existance. Public opinion was hugely against this, to the point where familes were breaking apart over it and even the US government got involved. So supposedly Ole Joe Smith rescended this revelation and abolished it. How do you like that? Basically he is saying that even GOD is afraid of the US government.
Anyhow in my opinion Joe Smith instituted this guidence because his wife found out about extra marital affairs, and since he supposedly had the direct line to god, he formulated this plan as a way to get out of hot water with the situation he found himself in. I have no proof to justify this reasoning, but rest assured if you bring it up to them they will feel threatened by an educated person analyzing and contemplating the questionable aspects of their religon. Best of luck debunking them.

Members of the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints are sometimes called/ call themselves Mormons because of our belief in the Book of Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ.
Back in the 19th century, some of the men in the church practiced plural marriage, taking more than one wife. Only about 3% of the men ever had more than one wife, and only 25% of the members, which means most had 2 or at the most 3 wives. And 97% had only one, or none.
We are believers that Jesus is the Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

Mormons don't currently do the many wives thing, although they did when they started out and they plan to in the afterlife. So you make your own conclusion.
